Update: Steve Toll already NLL’s new Iron-Man

Although it appeared that Steve Toll was on the verge of breaking Kevin Finneran’s National Lacrosse League consecutive games record this weekend when the Rochester Knighthawks host the New York Titans, after pouring over stats, game sheets and box scores with NLL staff dating as far back as the 1991 Major Indoor Lacrosse League  season, it now appears various consecutive game streaks have been in Toll’s back pocket all along.

The following is what we were able to determine while working with the league.

Although considered by many to have a streak that spanned 163 total games, both regular season and playoffs, Finneran actually ended up missing a mid-season game during his rookie year with the New England Blazers in 1991, which throws off our previously reported numbers a bit.

Our reported numbers on Toll were off by a single game as well, as we were able to confirm with the league that Toll’s consecutive games actually did in fact start during his lone regular season appearance in 1999, and not during the Toronto Rock’s playoff games that same season as we had previously thought was the case.

What does that all mean?

It means that previous to Toll taking the honour, Finneran had played 138 consecutive regular season games and 158 consecutive total games, regular season and playoffs combined.

Toll actually broke Finneran’s regular season record (by playing his 139th consecutive regular season game) on April 19, 2008, when the Knighthawks beat the Minnesota Swarm, 11-8, at Xcel Energy Center.

Toll then broke Finneran’s regular season and playoffs combined record (by playing his 159th consecutive game) on January 10th, 2009, when the Knighthawks fell to the Philadelphia Wings, 16-13, at Blue Cross Arena.

Either way though, whether broken this year or last season, Toll’s accomplishment during a season when injuries seem to be the norm, especially in Rochester, deserves a huge pat on the back and acknowledgment for a vet that has truly helped shape the pro game over his 12-year career (and counting).
