Tuts’ World Famous Lacrosse Trivia: Round 2 Revisited

lewrat50.jpg

In this past week’s Tuts’ World Famous Lacrosse Trivia there were a couple questions that stumped the faithful off the boards, but there were also a number of answers you guys got that I thought were maybe obscure enough to keep you thinkin’ all week.

After the jump, check out last week’s correct answers, the story that goes with each question and who off the boards leads the pack after two rounds in the books.

1. Although much is presently and deservedly being made of former Mississauga Tomahawk, John Tavares, and his climb to the NHL, what former Tommie has already made the jump to the NHL, making his debut last year? Bonus: What NHL team drafted the player in question and what NLL team also drafted him?

Answer: Matt Moulson is the former Tommie that crashed the NHL ranks last year.
Bonus: Although Moulson has played the last two NHL seasons with the LA Kings, he was actually drafted 263rdoverall by the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Rochester Knighthawks also drafted the Mississauga two-way stud, former Hawks’ GM and head coach Paul Day telling us years back, “We’re trying to draft good kids and good athletes and Matt definitely is both. We think Matt could be great in this league (NLL). He was worth a gamble. We are aware there’s a good chance he will play pro hockey.”
Who got it: thrillis was the only one to nab this one, while no one got either half of the bonus question.

2. Previous to Daryl Veltman scoring a natural hat-trick to start a game versus the Philadelphia Wings this year (Friday, January 23, 2009), who was the last player to also score a natural hat-trick to start a game in the NLL?

Answer: Lewis Ratcliff scored three straight consecutive goals to start the game in his return to Calgary last year, the Rock losing the game in OT to the Roughnecks. Saturday, April 19th, 2008
Who got it: The question was inspired by everyone’s favorite bad guy on the boards, mtbf, but no one guessed the right answer all week. Not even any emails into us by NLL players or coaches got that one right.

3. What player’s stick did Colin Doyle use during the NLL Champion’s Cup final in 2002?

Answer: After having his stick break at some point between Toronto and Albany, the then recently retired Paul Gait, who won the league’s MVP nod that year, was in Albany for pre and post-game fanfare and heard that Doyle was without a twig. Gait, who like Doyle is obviously a deBeer man, offered Colin his stick to use during the game, where Doyle scored a hat-trick en route to the Rock winning the Cup and Colin being named the game’s MVP.
Who got it: Bruiser28 was the first one to get this one.

4. What former teammate did Craig Conn win the most Minto Cups with? Bonus: What current teammate(s) off the Toronto Rock has Conn won a Minto Cup with?

Answer: Although Conn won two Minto titles with a number of guys while playing for the A’s, the only player he won three Minto’s with was Mark Paniccia, who won a third Cup with Conn when the pair spent their last season of junior ball with the Burnaby Lakers. St. Kitts product Ian Hawksbee also joined them out West that summer, but that was just his second national title shared with the pair, as Hawksbee was with the Spartan Warriors when Conn and Paniccia won their first Minto in 2001.
Bonus: The only current pro teammate Conn won a Cup with is Luke Wiles, who the A’s picked up in his last season of junior ball. Wiles, who had unexpectedly lost his father to a heart attack just days before St. Catharines was to face Burnaby in the final game of the tourney, scored three goals in the win and was also named the Minto MVP. Many in attendance still talk about the game as one of the most emotional moments they’ve witnessed in any sporting event.
Who got it: apetz got both questions right.

5. Who is the last BCJALL (BC Jr. A) player that led the league (the BCJALL, not the NLL) in both regular season scoring (total points) and penalty minutes?

Answer: Curt Malawsky led the BC Jr. A loop in both those categories during the 1991 season while playing for Coquitlam. Malawsky led the league with 152 Pts and coincidently 152 PIM, also leading the BCJALL in assists (97).
Who got it: 30rock nailed this one.

6. What current NLL Head Coach played as a full-time player during the 2001 NLL season alongside a player he presently coaches in the league this year, and who is the player in question? Bonus: Who coached both that coach and player during the 2001 NLL season?

Answer: There were actually two legit answers for this one. So, #1 Gary and Paul Gait played together with Washington in 2001, with Paul currently coaching Gary in Rochester. And #2, Josh Sanderson and Troy Cordingley played together with Albany in 2001, with Troy coaching Shooter in Calgary this year.
Bonus: #1 Darris Kilgour coached the Gaits in Washington and #2 Terry Sanderson coached both current Necks in Albany, with T also on the bench in Calgary this year.
Who got it: laxinoregon got both Q’s going the Gait route, and a couple NLLers emailed us with the right answer for the other probable route, but no one off the boards go that one.

 7. What former New York Saint had his skull fractured by former Buffalo Bandits defender, Andy Ogilvie, during a fight in the 2003 NLL season at HSBC Arena?

Answer: UMass grad Matt McFarland decided to dance with Ogilvie in ‘03, who obliged and left him with a fractured dome after smashing his head in with those ham hocks he has for fists. We’re told doctors would not allow McFarland to travel back home via plane and he was forced to travel by car.
Who got it: Unbelievably Bruiser28, who’s already gotten a couple of the tougher questions over the past two weeks, impressively named McFarland.

8. Who was the last NLL Rookie of the Year to hail from the province of British Columbia? Bonus: Who was the last WLA (Sr. A) Rookie of the Year to win any ‘major’ NLL year-end hardware (not including All-Team members)?

Answer: Although Tom Marechek was a pretty popular answer, Darren Fridge, who won the rookie of the year nod in 1996 with the first edition of the Boston Blazers, is the last BC native to win the league’s ROY award. Marechek won it in 1994.
Bonus: The last WLA rookie of the year to win any major individual year-end pro hardware is actually John Tavares, who shared the WLA’s rookie of the year award with John Wilson of the Burnaby Lakers during the 1990 season. Tavares was playing his first full season of Sr. A lacrosse after spending his entire junior career with Mississauga.
Who got it: No one off the boards got either answer right. A couple NLL players got Fridge, but no one got JT.

9. What Canadian did Zack Greer play alongside in his freshman year at Duke University? Bonus: During the same year as Greer’s freshman season, ten Canadians led NCAA Division I schools in scoring (total points, goals + assists). Name those players (each correct player/school is worth a point). Clue: All but one of those ten is currently in the NLL. Extra Bonus: What team did Greer score his first ever regular season point against as a Duke freshman, and what Canadian was playing for the opposition? Both Greer and this other player led their team in scoring in that game. Clue: The other player does not currently play in the NLL.

Answer: Ryan Marshall was playing his final year at Duke when Greer came aboard. Marshall currently plays in the NLL with the San Jose Stealth.
Bonus: The ten Canadians that led their DI schools in scoring were: Merrick Thomson (Albany), Garret Kikot (Bellarmine), Kyles Wailes (Brown), Kevin Ross (Canisius), Jordan Hall (Delaware), Matt Brown (Denver), Matt Holman (Hartford), Daryl Veltman (Hobart), Athan Iannucci (Hofstra), and Andrew Watt (Robert Morris).
Extra Bonus: Greer played & scored in his first regular season start when Duke played Butler. The Canadian that led the Bulldogs in scoring in that game was Cliff Smith, who presently plays for Denver.
Who got it: Bruiser28 got Marshall and the extra bonus question about Butler. And here’s who got those ten leading scorers bonus answers…

Merrick Thomson – WINGS4EVER
Garret Kikot – WINGS4EVER
Kyle Wailes – No one
Kevin Ross – No one
Jordan Hall – WING4EVER
Matt Brown – Bruiser28
Matt Holman – Bruiser28
Daryl Veltman – WINGS4EVER
Athan Iannucci – WINGS4EVER
Andrew Watt – No one

10. What former Jr. A Calgary Raiders player played hockey for Dartmouth University but did not play on the school’s lacrosse team during his four years there? Bonus: What NHL team drafted him?

Answer: Nick Johnson, who many considered the best ball player on most of those early Calgary Raiders teams, played hockey for Dartmouth.
Bonus:Like Moulson in question one, the same NHL club also drafted Johnson, the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Who got it: WINGS4EVER got it on the boards.

So for those tracking the standings, even though Bruiser28 is pullin’ out some of the more obscure answers, WINGS4EVER kept his lead after cleaning up with those bonus answers in question nine…

WINGS4EVER 13Pts
Bruiser28 7Pts
laxinoregon 2Pts
thrillis 1Pt
apetz 1Pt
30rock 1Pt
BretMac 1Pt
