The National Lacrosse League Market Watch: Week 8

The usual suspects increased their stock again in The Market Watch this week, while a pair of former Minto Cup winning Six Nations Arrows teammates have been reunited and sparked some much needed magic on the court. Not surprisingly, their re-established scoring touch also helped scored the W.

What former junior teammates and a host of other current NLL vets made the list this week? Find out after the jump.

BULLS

Mark Steenhuis, Buffalo Bandits
Steenhuis decided to flirt with another single game record, finishing two goals off Gary and Paul Gait’s ten in a game, Paul thrashing Philly for ten in ‘94 and then Gary doing the same thing five years later against Toronto.

Shawn Evans, Rochester Knighthawks
Evans, who’d been struggling all year to find the back of the net consistently, exploded on the scoresheet against the Titans, scoring three and assisting on five others. He had been averaging just a goal a game previous to his slick showing against New York.

Chad Thompson, Toronto Rock
After sitting on the shelf last year due to a bum knee and then seeing little time this winter, Thompson showed that he is more than capable of scoring at the highest level, posting a hat-trick against a potentially league best D on Friday night. He proved Canaidan box guys know how to switch hands too (beauty goal).

Dan Dawson, Boston Blazers
At halftime in the Minnesota game, Dawson sat at eight points and looked like he mighta been on pace to touch Steenhuis’ 17 from just a week before. Although he finished five points shy, Dawson’s 19 points over the weekend helped the Blazers stretch their W streak to four games.

Daryl Veltman & Rhys Duch
The two rookie sensations continue to dominate the charts, scoring a combined 19 points over the weekend. Although both were throwing up a points per game average to start the year that woulda seen them smash Gavin Prout’s rookie scoring record, right now only Duch has maintained the pace, but would only tie Prout’s 82 from 2002. Either way, it should come down to the wire with the way these two are playing.

Callum Crawford, Edmonton Rush
Crawford’s four goals against the Mammoth in the Rush’s big win on Sunday night are the most goals we’ve seen from the former Chicago Shamrox since he torched his current homies for four goals in 2008, the Rox spanking the Rush 17-11.

Craig Point, Rochester Knighthawks
Reunited with his former Minto winning teammate, Shawn Evans, Point too bounced back to the kinda numbers (2G, 3A) most expected from last year’s rookie of the year. In his first game for Rochester since last week’s swap with Minnesota, Point had by far his best night of the year,

Chris Gill, Colorado Mammoth
After being on the sidelines for almost a month, Gill came back to the Mammoth’s lineup over the weekend, scoring five goals during Colorado’s double L. In his only other two starts from earlier this year, Gill had not scored a single point, goal or assist, for the Mammoth.

Athan Iannucci, Philadelphia Wings
Nooch stormed back and looked about as close to 100% as could hope for, scoring a hat-trick in his first full game this year, also putting the game winner past Minny’s Kevin Croswell partway through the fourth period against the Swarm.

Josh Sanderson, Calgary Roughnecks
Although always known as more of a set-up guy than high scoring finisher, Sanderson’s five goals in the Boston loss were the most we’ve seen from the multiple Mann Cup winner since last year’s Toronto vs. Minnesota game that saw a combined 33 goals scored. The game also marked the first time this year Shooter didn’t register at least three helpers in a game. Sanderson’s shooting has gone up quite a bit since the Necks’ recent two game dive. When Calgary ran outta the gate to a 5-0 start, Sanderson was averaging 8 shots a game, but since then has averaged over 12 shots per. Not saying anything, but it’ll be an interesting trend to look at the rest of the way.

BEARS

Buffalo Bandits offense
Hard to knock ‘em since they scored 17 against Toronto in a huge come from behind win, but after Steenhuis and Tavares, the rest of the team scored just three goals on a combined 40 shots (both on and off goal).

Kevin Ross, Minnesota Swarm
After comin’ outta the blocks and posting some huge O numbers to kick-off ‘09, Ross, one of Minny’s Chicago Dispersal Draft picks, has come up with zero goals and just two helpers over the Swarm’s 0-2 weekend.

Jordan Hall, New York Titans
In his lowest offensive output since going pro, soph Hall had just a single assist in the Titans’ disappointing loss to the K’Hawks.

Dan Teat, Edmonton Rush
Even though the Rush came away with an all-important win against Colorado, ASG starter, Teat, had zero goals and previous to his helper on Crawford’s fourth period game winner, had no points in the game either. Teat has just two goals over Edmonton’s last three games, after scoring nine goals in his first three this year.
