Chris Panos on NLL sidelines, but still active in supporting the game, plus the links

When the Chicago Shamrox closed up shop in December, long time American vet Chris Panos was left without a club to play for during the 2009 National Lacrosse League season.

Although Panos is still hopeful in finding a spot on an NLL team at some point this winter, he hasn’t let the fact that he’s currently on the NLL sidelines stop him from making a difference in the game.

Panos, who still lives in the Chicago area where he runs Advanced Lacrosse, helped out Beth Griffin, a female high-school lacrosse new comer, who eagerly wanted to play the sport, but due to a tight budget at home while the family spends much of their income on hospice care for her terminally ill father, it didn’t look like lacrosse was a possibility.

The former Shamrox and current United States Indoor Lacrosse member, who lost his own father to cancer just five years ago, made sure Beth would be able to experience the sport he’s loved for so long, donating a fully strung stick and joining a group that has made lacrosse possible for Beth this year.

Panos told the Lake County News-Sun, “I always found sports were a great way to keep my mind occupied. Having teammates around you really helps. It seems like you have a great nucleus of people around you.”
