National Lacrosse League Trade Deadline: Free Agents

The swaps may have been cut-off on Tuesday afternoon, but teams had until yesterday to sign any free agents still on the market in the National Lacrosse League.
As they did when they made a bit of noise at the trade deadline dealing for Steve Dietrich, the Toronto Rock were likely the busiest team yesterday, picking up former Chicago Shamrox players, Jason Clark and Daryl Gibson, who’d yet to see any game day action this year since their former team closed up shop weeks before the start of the season.
Clark, who previously captained current Toronto Rock coach Jamie Batley’s Peterborough Lakers to a Mann Cup, has posted over 100 points since going to Chicago two years ago and was one of a number of long time vets that remained on the sidelines since December.
Gibson, who was actually selected by the Edmonton Rush in the Rox’s dispersal draft but later released, is joining the Rock for the third time in his career, winning titles with the team in 2003 and 2004. Gibson was a trade deadline day pickup for the franchise back in 2006 as well.
The Edmonton Rush picked up freebie keeper Jay Preece and moved him to their pracky roster, a move made necessary after dealing Dietrich to the Rock earlier in the week. The Rush also signed former NLL full-timer Kevin Howard to their practice roster.
You’d also have to think the Rochester Knighthawks are done with what was definitely an “interesting” year when it came to roster moves, yesterday bringing playing GM Regy Thorpe back onto the team’s active roster, as well as defender Troy Bonterre. The team dumped the recently signed Anthony Kelly and Andrew Lazore to make room for the two defensive vets.
And although the move was made earlier in the week, the Minnesota Swarm have re-signed multi-Cup winning defender Ian Rubel, who’d been unable to commit to the team earlier this year after beginning a career as a police office in Ontario. Rubel will help fill the gap left by injured defender Riley Kemp and more-so for pure defender Darren Halls.
The signing period ended with names such as Chris Panos, Jonas Derks, Phil Wetherup, Jamie Hanford, Brock Boyle, Derek Collins and the recently released Ryan Marshall and Lazore left on the sidelines.
