National Lacrosse League Player Poll: The MVP Race

Will Dan Dawson win his first MVP Award this year?
We’re only three weeks away from the National Lacrosse League shutting its regular season doors closed and letting their post-season ones fly open wilder than a Chris Brown sucker punch, so who ya got for the MVP title?
We’ve been tracking most major hardware this season through our Trophy Case Chase and Rookie Report breakdowns, but this week, we asked the guys who matter most in this league who they feel has been this year’s best ball player.
After the jump, check out the player’s faves for the MVP nod, along with some other MVP related jibba jabba in this week’s NLL Player Poll.
1. Who do you feel should be awarded the MVP in the NLL, or really any other sport?
38% The best pound-for-pound player in the league
62% The player most valuable to his team
“There should be an MVP and a most outstanding player award.”
“Umm hello, it’s called the MVP – Most VALUABLE Player, not the BPFPITL!”
“The voting for awards in this league is bogus anyways, so does it really matter?”
“I’m not gonna say that it’s easy to go out and score a bunch of points or whatever, but sometimes doing the little extra that goes unnoticed is way more valuable.”
“It’s the player a team could not do without. This year, that player is Pat O’Toole”
“Subtract the player in question from his team. If they can’t win without him, there’s your MVP.”
2. Similar to the NHL’s Lester B. Pearson Award (given to the NHL’s top player voted by the NHLPA), should the NLL & PLPA award a similar trophy decided on by the players?
92% Yeah for sure. We play against ‘em and have the best perspective.
8% No. The MVP nod they already hand out is good enough for me.
“Why not, it would bring a little more recognition that some GM’s or media personnel may not give credit to.”
“Guys would just vote for their buddies or teammates instead of voting the most deserving player. It could end up being a joke of an award if it turns into a popularity contest.”
“An American player would never be voted for because the Canadian players would never vote for an American.”
“The only trouble with this is that lacrosse is so Eastern biased. Jordan Hall was the 2008 Rookie of the Year, but eastern voters killed him.”
“Why not make them two different awards. It definitely wouldn’t hurt anybody’s feelings to hand out MORE hardware.”
“What, the league would listen to what the players have to say? Not in this lifetime.”
3. Although there are still a couple weeks left on the sked, who do you feel has been 2009’s MVP?
9% Josh Sanderson
28% Dan Dawson
2% Kenny Montour
2% Matt Disher
0% Gavin Prout
16% Mark Steenhuis
0% Brian Langtry
12% Colin Doyle
18% Casey Powell
0% Shawn Williams
5% John Tavares
8% Other
Other answers include: Pat O’Toole, Tracey Kelusky, Athan Iannucci, Brodie Merrill, Jeff Moleski, and Tom Johnson (suspected man-crush alert)
“Everyone will vote Mark (Steenhuis) here, but the MVP (valuable) award has gotta be Casey (Powell). Real simple, when he doesn’t play, they lose. When he plays, they win.”
“He has been the difference.” Josh Sanderson
“Putting up the numbers he is, playing with the players he is!” Dan Dawson
“Rochester might be the worst Champion’s Cup winning team ever because of Paddy this year.” Pat O’Toole
“But that’s the obvious choice. Who’s the guy who helps his team out the most without getting the glory? Not sure if he’s even on the list. Steenhuis right now, but if Boston keeps rolling, Dawson for sure.”
‘Daws carries his team year after year and it’s about time he gets the nod!”
“Rochester 0-4 without him. 5-2 with him.” O’Toole again
“Close race with Steenhuis, but I feel Boston would be nowhere without Dan. The guy is unreal on and off the floor.”
“He’s got two of the most inexperienced guys in the league behind him, has zero safety net, but has been this year’s biggest clutch goalie. No one’s turned away more leather. Rush should have kept him.” Matt Disher
