Portland, Calgary and Minnesota win in the West

Overtime is a lot to ask of a rookie goaltender making his first National Lacrosse League start, but what the Jax needed last night they got from Matt Flindell: 49 saves on 61 shots, including two in overtime as Portland topped the Colorado Mammoth 13-12.

After trailing 9-6 at the half, a 4-0 third quarter surge by the Mammoth put them into the lead, but Tim Campeau struck twice in the fourth and Brodie Merrill once while Gavin Prout and Brian Langtry each scored for Colorado, bringing things to a tie at the end of regulation.

While Flindell turned away two in overtime, Colorado goaltender Andrew Leyshon made four stops, but with his fourth save came a rebound that was snagged by Pete Jacobs and deposited for the 13-12 win. Portland now sits solidly in second in the West, while Colorado, Minnesota, and San Jose are tied for third.

Campeau and Merrill each led the Jax with three goals and one assist, while Derek Malawsky and Richard Morgan each scored twice. Langtry had four goals and two assists for the Mammoth, and Prout had three and three.

Calgary Roughnecks 12 Rochester Knighthawks 9

One night after a big win in Colorado and minutes after taking a 7-1 lead in Calgary, the Rochester Knighthawks ran out of gas and the Roughnecks went on an eight-goal run to take the 9-7 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Shawn Williams finally stopped the bleeding with a goal one and a half minutes into the fourth, but the Roughnecks followed that up with two scores from Jeff Shattler and one from Josh Sanderson. Shawn Evans found the back of the net at 7:54 to bring the Knighthawks within three at 7:54, but they wouldn’t get any closer as the game ended 12-9.

Pat Campbell came into the game halfway through the first to stop 31 of 36 in the win. Tracey Kelusky had four goals, including three in the eight-goal comeback, Sanderson scored twice and set up six, and Jeff Shattler scored three with one assist. Evans led the Knighthawks with two goals and five assists. With a Philadelphia win last night, the Knighthawks are now tied with the Wings for fourth in the East.

Minnesota Swarm 9 Edmonton Rush 7

It was in the fourth quarter that Minnesota finally pulled away, outscoring Edmonton 3-1 to take the lead as well as the win as the Swarm defeated the Rush 9-7 to pull into a potential playoff position.

Chad Culp’s lone goal was the game-winner, with Culp tacking up a total of four points on the night after assisting on three. Aaron Wilson had the insurance goal, scoring two goals and assisting on one. Other Swarm scoring came from Josh Funk, Sean Pollock, Kevin Ross, and Ryans Sharp, Ward and Cousins. Kevin Croswell stopped 46 of 53.

For the Rush, Dan Teat had five assists and Ryan Benesch scored two and set up one. Chris Levis turned away 40 of 49 in the loss.
