National Lacrosse League Girl of the Week: Matchup 8 is Gina vs. Doris

Popular is the word we’re looking for today. These Girl of the Week matchups are proving to be quite popular the last few weeks as more than 2,700 votes were cast in last week’s National Lacrosse League Girl of the Week matchup that saw Marie cruise to an easy win over Kirsten. The week before that, more than 14,000 votes were cast, so it’s gonna be pretty interesting to see what happens with our next matchup: Gina vs. Doris. Gina comes to us via the Boston Blazers and Doris via the New York Titans. Possible playoff preview? Anything’s possible in the Girls of the Week contest.

Before we continue, however, a programming note. Because just 14 Girls of the Week were named during the regular season, that leaves us with an empty bracket in one of the quarterfinals. So we’re gonna take the easy way out and hand last week’s winner, Marie, a bye into the semifinal round, where she’ll take on the winner of the Krystle vs. Heidi matchup, which will be coming soon.

Getting back to the program, Gina first graced us with her presence back in Week 2 of the season. She’s the dental hygenist who also happens to be the reigning Miss Western Massachusetts. A real dancing beauty, and that’s not just a cliche. She’s a beauty contest winner and she’s dancing for a playoff team in the Boston Blazers. Laugh all you want, but she’s the one who’s season is still going, at least until the vote’s over for this particular matchup. How far can she go? It’s up to you, voter. She breezed with relative ease past Buffalo’s Meghan in the first round and if she should happen to win this round as well, at least we know she has those shiny chicklets to display in that winning smile. And if she doesn’t win? Well, we figure she’ll land on her feet. Pursuing a degree at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences tends to bode well for a secure future.

We told ourselves that it’s old news to crack the joke about Doris having her day, so we won’t do it. But you know you’re thinking it. How can you not? Hearing the name Doris kinda kicks it automatically into that famous actress way of thinking. Is this Titans dancer a famous actress? Maybe not. But she has performed in Madison Square Garden, and not a lot of people can claim that. We tried, but there isn’t a lot of demand for tickets to watch chumps write stories for Web sites. At least not yet. So until that day comes, we’re just gonna have to settle for Doris and her Titans teammates as they get ready to cheer on the Titans in their playoff game against the Rochester Knighthawks. And should that season come to an end this weekend, we’re sure she’d land on her feet much like Gina might. Doris is a busy student at St. John’s and her internship at VH1 surely made for some nice connections in that industry. As if that weren’t enough, she keeps herself busy with charity work, most notably the Marty Lyons Foundation that works with terminally ill children so that deserves some serious props.

So there ya have it, fans. Gina vs. Doris. Who will it be? Cast your vote today and we’ll start getting our next matchup ready for your eyes, er, voting conscience.

What type of celebrations would you like to see after big NLL goals?
