National Lacrosse League Girl of the Week: Matchup 9 is Emily vs. Kelly

Doris has had her day, it appears. She has Gina of the Boston Blazers to thank for that, because Gina rolled into the semifinal bracket of our National Lacrosse League Girl of the Week contest by a count of 1,421-350. So even if the Blazers are finished with their first season, Gina took it upon herself to keep Beantown in the headlines. Like the Bruins, Celtics and Red Sox aren’t doing that on their own! Still, it’s cool to see Gina and the Blazers still representin’ and who she faces in the first semifinal depends on who wins this week’s matchup: Emily of the Wings or Kelly of the Rush.

Emily’s the smart one, remember? Just kidding. All the dancers are smart. But still, when word hacks get to write about others who know a thing or two about the language and how it works, there’s a bit of a bond. Then again, there’s also some fear that the other word nerd knows what he or she is talking about and as the writer composes, it’s in the back of the mind that any mistake might be pointed out. Still, gotta carry on and that’s where we talk about Emily’s degrees in English and in Writing. We’re betting if she were in charge, she’d have written a better, happier script for the Wings for this season, but we’re also sure her team dealt with some injury issues that made things tough. Wings games or not, she’s busy enough volunteering her time with Amnesty International and the Debbie Pieri Angel Foundation, where she puts her writing talent to use with the newsletter there.

Out in Edmonton, Kelly’s another one of the smart ones, but in a different field. She’s got a Master’s in Educational Psychology and hopes to run her very own practice someday. Run a practice? Wouldn’t it be easier to coach a team? Then you could run practice anytime you want. What’s that? A different kind of practice. OK … gotcha. Let’s just stick with what we know, and that is that Kelly may not have a playoff team to cheer in Edmonton this playoff season, but she does have plenty to do in volunteering as a tutor for kids aged 3 to 17. She also coordinates charity events for the Canadian Paraplegic Association and she uses dance as her outlet. Makes sense. She says she enjoys sailing, which of course reminds us of that old Christopher Cross song but lots of you, and Kelly herself, may not even be familiar with that tune. Gotta go way back to 1980 for that song and that might be before your time. But, we digress.

So there ya have it. Matchup 9 of our Girls of the Week contest. Last week we had more than 1,700 voters so let’s see if we can match that. You voters  are doing this series proud, so keep up the great work!
