Dan Dawson Named National Lacrosse League MVP
Dan Dawson is your National Lacrosse League MVP for 2009. The 27-year-old Boston Blazer led the expansion franchise to a share of the East Division crown, finished second in league scoring with 104 points and set (with Josh Sanderson) the NLL’s single-season assist record with 74. He’s topped 104 points before but obviously the helpers was a career-high, which shows his role as QB and de facto leader of the young Blazers.
Here’s the NLL’s release:
The announcement of the 2009 National Lacrosse League season awards concludes today with the Most Valuable Player Award, presented by Reebok. This Most Valuable Player Award for the 2009 NLL season goes to Dan Dawson of the Boston Blazers.
Dawson had another standout season while playing for the expansion Blazers. The All-Star forward scored 30 goals and set a new career highs in assists (74) and produced his second highest career point total (104). The 74 assists put him in a tie with Calgary Roughnecks forward Josh Sanderson for the league lead. The total also stands as a new record for most assists in a single season.
Perhaps the most impressive part of Dawson’s season was the leadership that he brought to an expansion team with a young roster. Serving as team captain, Dawson led Boston to a 10-6 record and a playoff berth in the East Division. The ten wins included road victories at Buffalo and Calgary. The eight-year NLL veteran was recently named the winner of the league’s Sportsmanship Award for the 2009 season. He now adds the first Most Valuable Player Award to his impressive career accomplishments to date. The 2009 Most Valuable Player Award is presented by Reebok.
The 2009 season concludes on Friday, May 15, as the Calgary Roughnecks (14-4) host the New York Titans (12-6) at Pengrowth Saddledome in the NLL Championship Game. Gametime is 9:30pm Eastern. Watch the game live on the NLL Network at NLL.com, or listen live on SIRIUS channel 126. Coverage begins with the Championship Pre-Game Show at 8pm Eastern on the NLL Network.
