National Lacrosse League Girl of the Week: Title match is Gina vs. Marie

It’s time to crown a champion for the National Lacrosse League Girl of the Week contest and this season’s final matchup brings us Gina from the Boston Blazers and Marie from the Philadelphia Wings. Impressed as we were with the more than 103,000 votes cast during this past week’s semifinal matchup between Heidi and Marie, it’s not too difficult to figure out where these votes came from and how they got here. But there’s no rule against that, and Marie moves on to the final by a final count of 62,502 to Heidi’s 50,912. So flip the page to see the finalists and read some of their thoughts about being in the title matchup.

Before we go on, though, we gotta throw some love Heidi’s way. It’s not easy to get more than 50,000 votes and lose this thing, but that’s the situation this Colorado Mammoth dancer finds herself in and she’s been nothing but graceful. We know her entire family was behind her in helping with votes and support, so props are out to the Mile High City.

Now, we’ll start with Gina since it’s been a couple of weeks since last we saw here on these pages. She’s a rookie dancer for the Boston Blazers squad, but then again, all of them were. Nonetheless, she was impressive in her wins this season, downing Meghan of Buffalo, Doris of New York and Kelly of Edmonton to land in the final. She hasn’t let success go to her head, though. “When my dance captain informed me that I would be chosen to represent the Blazers for the Girl of the Week competition, I felt very honored because my team consists of all beautiful, talented, and driven girls,” she told us via email.

And lest you think this contest is based entirely in the shallow end of the pool, think again. Gina’s most proud of her work in the community. “I was informed that one of the reasons I was chosen was because of my community work as a local ambassador to the Children’s Miracle Network, and I think it’s incredible that the NLL is exhibiting these qualities of the dancers so fans can recognize that there is so much more to us than just our appearance,” she said. “To have made it this far in the competition is very exciting and humbling to know that I have the support of so many Blazer and NLL fans!”

So there ya have it, fans. Gina from the Boston Blazers who doubles as a beauty queen and dental hygenist. And just in case ya need more, NLLInsider.com’s got your back with the link to her team page.

Now on to Marie. Now you may remember this Philadelphia Wings dancer as our last entrant from the regular season and because of a scheduling thing with the league office, she ended up with one less contest. That doesn’t make her advancement any less impressive, though. She rolled past Kirsten of the Buffalo Bandits with relative ease, got through on a bye because there was no bottom half of the bracket, then staged the epic win over Heidi with a colossal vote count.

“Personally, I never thought that I’d make it into the finals, but I had the help from my friends, family, and co-workers; they all voted for me every day,” Marie told us via email this week. But now that she’s here, she’s not about to let this opportunity pass by. “For me, being in the finals is an experience that only happens once and I am so excited to have made it this far. The last round with Heidi was very close and it seemed that her and I were going back and forth with the lead, but eventually I pulled it off.”

So it hasn’t been too bad of a showing for the rookie dancer who sharpens her skill at the Koresh Dance School with hopes for a career in dance. And as competitive as the world of dance can be, Marie’s got nothing but good wishes for her rival in the final. “Gina and I want to take home the win not only for us, but for our teams. I wish the best of luck to Gina and may the best girl win!” How’s that for sportmanship? Not too shabby. And yeah, to keep it fair here among the finalists, NLLInsider.com’s got your back again and here’s her team page link just in case you need some more of Marie.

So there ya have it, fans. The final matchup. And just in case you wanted a stroll down memory lane, here’s a peak to last year’s final, won by Ashley of the Chicago Shamrox. But don’t spend too much time there, unless you’ve already voted.
