Lacrosse Links: Williams traded to Excelsiors

As reported on the Brooklin Redmen’s website, the Brampton Excelsiors have traded for the rights to Shawn Williams for four future draft picks and future considerations.

The brief item includes a statement from GM Wayne Colley expressing that the decision was made more difficult by Williams’ leadership and professionalism during his time with the Redmen.

Toronto Nationals slip with double-loss weekend, and the links

It was a rough weekend for the Toronto Nationals, as they followed up Thursday’s loss to Boston with another four-goal loss to Denver last night.

Merrick Thompson (5G,1A) and Delby Powless (3G,2A) led the way for Toronto, which trailed 10-8 at the half and fell to .500 (4-4) with the loss heading into a July 4th showdown with the Chicago Machine. Check out the full release here. READ MORE »

This week we’re gonna take a quick peek at some of this summer’s top Jr. A defenders and some of the names that could find themselves as finalists for our JOTY year-end hardware.

Remember, we’re selecting guys on what they’ve done this summer, so although there are some pretty high profile names out there, many are just starting to roll into camp and haven’t had as big an impact on the game from start-to-(almost) finish like the guys after the jump have.

Wings working hard to push NLL in Philly, plus the links

So the big news out of the National Lacrosse League this week didn’t include anything about the players. At least not current players. NLLInsider.com broke the news on two front office stories this week, the first being that Duane Jacobs stepped down from as coach of the Minnesota Swarm. And yesterday, Philadelphia Wings coach Dave Huntley became the team’s general manager. So while the rumors circulate about where Dewey may end up, Huntley’s got his hands full in Philly but he also knows he has plenty of help as The Gloucester County Times breaks down how guys like Athan Iannucci and Geoff Snider help pimp the game’s popularity to the uncoverted. The Nationals made a valiant comeback in the second half, re-energized by Brett Queener’s play in cage, but fell to the Boston Cannons, 19-15, in MLL action on Thursday night.

The Play-Offs are Looming out West

Ten days! That’s all that remains in the 2009 BC Junior A lacrosse season.  From the start of the season it has been a dog fight for play-off seeding and the last ten days won’t be any different. All we know for sure is that the Coquitlam Adanacs defended their 2008 BCJLL regular season crown and the Langley Thunder will have to wait until next season to make an impact in the BC Junior loop. Geoff Snider and Taylor, Devan Wray team up for West Coast 150 Lacrosse Camp in Burnaby

Geoff Snider and Devan and Taylor Wray have a pretty sweet camp cooking for Canada’s West Coast. Their West Coast 150 Lacrosse Camp runs July 20-22 in Burnaby, B.C. The goal of the camp is to better prepare Canadian players for NCAA lacrosse. In addition to the three directors, among those in attendance will be Bryant’s Mike Pressler, Towson’s Shawn Nadelen, Drexel’s Greg Raymond, St. John’s assistant Dan Paccione, Bellarmine’s Bart Sullivan, Queens head coach Jim Fritz and Mercyhurst’s Brendan Burke. Head coach Dave Huntley takes GM post with Philadelphia Wings

The Philadelphia Wings have announced that current team head coach, Dave Huntley, will also be serving as the club’s GM after the franchise parted ways with Lindsay Sanderson last month.

“The ownership has conducted an extensive study of the positives and negatives of our organization,” said Wings’ Owner and President Russ Cline via a press release. 

“All the players and staff participated in an open and honest evaluation of where we are today and what it will take to win a league championship.”

The Wings championship draught now spans the previous eight NLL seasons, only making the playoffs in two of those years, both times being knocked out in their first and only match (’02 lost 12-11 vs. Washington and ‘08 lost 14-12 vs. Buffalo). READ MORE »
