National Lacrosse League Announces Australian Tour

It seemed like things were touch and go at one point, but the NLL announced today that the Australian tour is a go for Oct. 23-24 at Hisense Arena in Melbourne. The league didn’t mention any specific players, other than Aussie Keith Nyberg, who made it all the way to final cuts with the Calgary Roughnecks this year. If Gordon Purdie’s not wrapped up with fallball for NCAA Division II power Adelphi, he’d be a perfect candidate to play for his native Australia.

The National Lacrosse League has entered into an agreement to bring professional indoor lacrosse and the world’s best players to Australia for the first time ever.

The National Lacrosse League All-Star Series will be a two-game series to be played on the weekend of October 23-24 at Hisense Arena in Melbourne.  Each team will consist of nine of the world’s best players from the National Lacrosse League and three of Australia’s best home-grown talent.  Player announcements will be made in the coming weeks.

“This series demonstrates the international growth of lacrosse and the NLL”, said NLL Commissioner George Daniel. “We are excited about bringing the world’s best players to Australia.”

One of the six Australian players is Keith Nyberg, whose bid to make the Calgary Roughnecks roster in last year’s training camp went all the way to the final round of cuts.  “The NLL players really are the best in the world and it is amazing to have these guys play in our country,” Nyberg said. “The pace and level of skills of these athletes is phenomenal, and a huge step up from anything we have ever seen in Australia.”

Nyberg added, “Hopefully the event will showcase our sport to the Australian public and put it on the radar of young children looking to take up a new sport.”

Tickets for the 2009 NLL All Star Series are now on sale at Ticketek.com.
