The Money Ballers: Jr. A Edition Week 5, plus BC rookie scoring records

New Westminster Salmonbellies forward Tyler Digby

He’s back, after a short one week absence from the top spot in The Money Ballers.

That of course being New Westminster Salmonbellies ‘91er, Tyler Digby, who for the first time last week, wasn’t ranked #1 in the clutch countdown. Digby ranks just tied for 16th in provincial scoring, his goals weighing heavily however in the Bellies’ success this year.

Last week it was Port Coquitlam power forward, Scott Jones, who knocked Digby aside, that ranked first, but after a handful of game tying and go-ahead goals and assists in a couple close battles for the Bellies, Digby is back on top, his 2.5 point lead the biggest he’s had since opening the year tied with then St. Catharines Athletics sniper, Andrew Potter.

Coquitlam Adanacs forward and rookie of the year hopeful (if not favourite), Robert Church, also climbed the charts in a big way this week, his one week 6.5Pt showing one of this year’s biggest seven day jumps. He’s currently a single regular season point ahead of teammate Trevor Moore in the BCJALL scoring crown chase. Whatever either Church or Moore wind up with this year, it’ll likely be the highest point total the BC loop has seen since Garrett Billings registered 104 with the Burnaby Lakers in ‘05.

The last time someone from the Jr. Adanacs won a scoring title? Gotta rewind all the way back to the ‘94 season, when Curt Malawsky led the West with 73Pts. Oddly enough, the second highest point getter, like this year, was an Adanac teammate, Chris Konopliff finishing as that year’s runner up in the PTS column. The same end-of-year scenario looks pretty likely this year too.

The last time a rookie led BC in scoring? After going through BC’s archives, it looks like the last time, and maybe only time, a rookie led the province in scoring was in ‘74, when Kevin Alexander scored 159Pts in what was technically his rookie year in the league. Also kinda interesting, 30 seasons ago, Church’s current head coach with the Adanacs, Dan Perreault, led BC in scoring with the Burnaby Lakers.

Bottome line, Church is having one helluva legendary season in ‘09, one that one some level, will definitely be etched in the record books.

Back to The Money Ballers… Also impressive of late is Barrie Lakeshores forward, Caleb Wiles, who only first came onto the boards in Week 2, but is now a definite contender for the clutch title this year. Although the Lakeshores dropped a very important two points last night, their battle for one of the last spots in the OLA post-season chase, will no doubt see Wiles scoring some big momentum shifters over the next couple weeks.

Although Western studs like Digby, Jones and others have done well this year, like every summer, the West is a coupe weeks ahead of the rest of the country. Will BC’s best be able to hold off the likes of Andrew Potter, Randy Staats or Jesse Guerin down the stretch, while Ontario still battles during the regular season?

Also interesting to note, is the three Brampton Excelsiors currently on the leaderboard, Potter, Jason Jones and Scott Tinning, all deadline day(ish) pickups for the Excels. They’ve scored big goals all summer for the Athletics, Islanders and Braves, will they continue to do so down the stretch and during the post-season in Brampton? Definitely three high impact guys that have consistently produced this year.

Kevin Crowley, Corbyn Tao, and Eric Lewthwaite fall from this week’s rundown, while Joel McCready makes a big splash scoring some huge goals for the St. Catharines Athletics, Curtis Dickson, Marty Dinsdale and Cody Bremner, who was a Money Ball chart topper in ‘08 (as a rookie), all find their way onto the leaderboard below.
