Although negotiations are still ongoing, NLL Insider has learned that the Calgary Roughnecks are close to naming both Dave Pym and Curt Malawsky as two of their coaches for the 2010 National Lacrosse League season.

It appears that Malawsky, who just a few short months ago won his first NLL title after a pretty legendary pro career, will be running the team’s offense, Pym’s role over the past two seasons with the franchise, under the recently departed Troy Cordingley.

The Necks’ 206 regular season goals ranked second in the NLL this past season, behind only the Buffalo Bandits, while their 167 goals against, was best in the league. Their 68 power-play goals also easily led the league in that category as well.

It is unknown presently who the Roughnecks will have running their high profile defense, an undisclosed candidate apparently already being considered, but Pym will be working with both coaches in his new role with Calgary.

“Mr. (Brad) Bannister has past the torch to us,” said Pym of the impending promotion of both himself and Malawsky, who currently is suiting up for the Coquitlam Adanacs in the WLA.

“It has and will continue to be an honor and a wonderful privilege to work for owners who share the same character, determination and hard work as that of the players who so proudly wear the Roughneck jersey.”

Pym, a highly respected coach in Alberta at a variety of levels and previous head scout with the Roughnecks, was a co-finalist for NLL Insider’s Jr. coach of the year last summer, while Malawsky has had large scale success with the Jr. A Burnaby Lakers in previous summers, leading to the team to multiple Minto Cups during his time as the club’s head coach.

“Our approach to lacrosse is a way of life,” added Pym. “The passion and deep spiritual connection we have for this game grows deeper each passing day.

“Our coaching approach, as it was in the past, will be inclusive and collaborative. We will move forward with all of our systems, continuing to refine them. Our players know what we expect of them.”

An official announcement from the team is expected either today or later this week, while the naming of the rest of the team’s coaching staff is expected in coming weeks.
