NLL Insider 20Q: Rob Van Beek

Philadelphia Wings and Langley Thunder two-way baller, Rob Van Beek
During the NLL Insider 20Q’s so far this summer, we’ve been trying to get in touch with guys that are not only currently in the NLL (although, got a big name non NLLer potentially on deck that defintiely deserves some ink), but are having a big impact on games over the past couple months too.
One ball player that definitely fits the bill is Philadelphia Wings and Langley Thunder tranny stud, Rob Van Beek, who’s been a real sparkplug for a young and exciting Thunder team that have been grabbing headlines all summer.
Find out what UFC champ Van Beek, who helped ignite a near riot last week against the New Westminster Salmonbellies when he hit an out of the crease Matt Roik, thinks might look good on the boxla court, and what easy to make fave he wants in his belly before game time.
Hottest most sweat soaked barn you’ve ever been in…
My old barn in PoCo probably (PoCo Rec Centre). Or any barn I played in in the East last summer.
What athlete from any other sport outside of lacrosse, do you think is also custom made to play box lacrosse…
It would be interesting to see someone like Brock Lesnar or GSP out on the floor.

UFC Heavyweight champ and probably a decent boxla keeper, Brock Lesnar.
Best lacrosse team name at any level…
The Pylons. It was a beer league hockey team I played once. I thought it was a good one.
One rule you’d change, or add, in the NLL…
Penalties for diving. When somone tries to “sell” a call like in soccer and acts like a little girl.
If you could pick just one pre-game meal to have for the rest of your career, what would it be…
KD
Best surface to play box/indoor ball on, concrete, turf, or for those that have played on it, wood…
Wood
Worst injury you’ve ever sustained…
Torn PCL (knee)
What past champ will bounce back to a pro championship faster, Rochester, Toronto or Philadelphia…
Philly
Toughest arena, winter or summer, to get a win in…
Memorial Arena in Peterborough.
Best fight, at absolutely any level of the game, you’ve witnessed…
Matt Green one punching Chris Kinnear.

Kraft Dinner with a dollop of ketchup on the side.
Most famous person you’ve met cuz of your lax connections…
Don’t really know. Maybe Bob “The Hound” Kelly from the old Flyers.
Best player nickname…
My own, “Mr. Saturday Night” (lol)
What one band’s tunes would be perfect to use as the NLL’s soundtrack…
Metallica, AC/DC… I don’t really know, tough to say.
One vet not currently in the NLL you think deserves a roster spot…
Whichever vets are out this season cuz Portlands out?
Are goalie pads too big in today’s game…
They sure are bigger than they used to be.
If you had to pick one trick as your signature move, what would it be…
I don’t think I have a move (lol)

Vintage Philly Flyer Bob Kelly
That one coach that made a huge difference in your lacrosse career…
Probably the old man, he was my coach for most of my lacrosse career. (Note: Rob’s dad is Gerry Van Beek, currently the GM of the Sr. Langley Thunder, but previoulsy served as the PoCo Saints head coach, winning coach of the year in ‘03 in the BCJALL)
After its first year, did video replay on “goals” help the game this past season…
Sure I guess. It gave the game something new and something most other sports already have.
Who is the greatest ever to play the box/indoor game…
Tough to say, but John Tavares or Gary Gait would have to be one-two.
One word to describe your game…
Explosive
