Chicago Cloverz are your Fann Cup champs

Chicago may not have the Shamrox anymore, but the Cloverz know how to represent our game in the Midwest. The Cloverz hosted the 2009 edition of the Fann Cup and won it all last weekend. The Cloverz defeated the Toronto Roadies 6-5 in the championship game and, according to organizers, it’s just the third time in the eight-year history of the event that the host team won the Cup. “This year’s tournament showed what the Fann Cup is all about,” tournament president Ray Kincaid said. “Lots of friends, lots of lacrosse, and lots of fun.” Read on for details, and a picture of the winners.

Nine teams from five National Lacrosse League cities participated in this year’s tournament, played in Naperville, Ill., just outside of Chicago. Represented were Rochester, Toronto, Chicago, Buffalo, Philadelphia and Minnesota. Organizers said about 200 people overall participated in the event, including nearly 130 players in all.

Outside of the games, everyone was kept busy with pre-game and post-game parties, as well as a silent auction to raise funds for the American Diabetes Association and the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. In all, $4,000 was raised for these charities.

More information can be seen at the tournament’s official Fann Cup Web site, which includes a great history of the event.
