In not exactly breaking news, the Toronto Rock continued their rebuild this past Friday, trading away team captain, Chris Driscoll, to the Buffalo Bandits in exchange for former Rock defender, Phil Sanderson, who has won both a Champion’s Cup and Mann Cup since originally being dealt by Toronto.

The Rock had previously traded Sanderson just before the trade deadline during the ‘07 season, to the Bandits for Buffalo’s first round pick that same calendar year, later packing that pick up with their 51st pick in the draft and dealing those selections to the Minnesota Swarm for Kasey Beirnes.

Driscoll, who was named Toronto’s captain after the retirement of Jim Veltman, had spent the previous seven seasons with the Rock, usually playing a two-way defensive role with the team.

Sanderson and Driscoll were Mann Cup winning teammates with the Brampton Excelsiors in ‘02.

“Phil is an unbelievable leader in the room and on the floor,” said Rock coach Troy Cordingley via the team’s press release.  “He is a smart defender that plays the defensive system well that we will be playing this upcoming year.”

Sanderson currently plays for Cordingley’s Excels, the third current Brampton player the Rock have traded for since recently named GM Terry Sanderson and Cordingley were hired by the franchise. The Rock also picked up Sandy Chapman shortly after the Portland Lumberjax dispersal draft, and Mike Hominuck last week in a trade with the Edmonton Rush, both current Sr. Excels.

In Friday’s other transaction, the Boston Blazers released Carter Livingstone, and a day earlier, the Edmonton Rush signed former Portland captain, Pat Jones, to a two year deal.
