NLL players past and present keeping busy, plus the links

So it’s official. The New York Titans are moving to Orlando, Fla., but that’s not really news. We’ve known about that for some time. So let’s move on to something else that’s official: Lacrosse players are cool, and busy. That’s especially official for one former National Lacrosse League baller and another current one. Chris Panos didn’t play this past season after the Chicago Shamrox folded up tents, and Bruce Codd of the world champion Calgary Roughnecks is keeping himself busy this summer by playing, and coaching, for championships. Turn the page to find out what’s up.
First, Panos. Dude’s long been recognized as one of the game’s top-shelf talents but when the Shamrox ended operations before last season, he found himself waiting by the telephone for a call. He’s still waiting for that call to get another shot at playing in the NLL, but he’s certainly not bored these days. He’s still in Illinois, near Chic ago, and has been occupied with coaching and helping kids in that area take their skills on to the collegiate level.
“The recruiting process is a huge process,” he told The Pioneer Press. “I have a whole service I do.”
The former Hofstra University player who battled injuries the last couple of seasons he played, including a devastating foot injury, remains active with area high school players and told the paper he hasn’t ruled out a return to the game. Whether as a player or team owner, he wants back in.
“If I get a good offer to continue, I still have a desire to play,” he said. “I’m looking to possibly buy a team in the National Lacrosse League.”
What about Codd? Well, he’s fresh of a Champion’s Cup victory with the Roughnecks, but he’s busy this summer with the Okotok Raiders, coaching the junior team and playing with the Senior B team. The juniors are in a heated battle with the Edmonton Eclipse for a berth in the Minto Cup finals for Junior A. Meanwhile, the Senior B Raiders are in contention for a President’s Cup title.
And if that’s not enough, Codd’s also managing his role as technical director for the Alberta Lacrosse Association.
“I’ve been on quite a roll, so I want to keep it going,” he told SlamSports.
