The Mann Cup championships for the Canadian Lacrosse Association (CLA) Senior ‘A’ national title runs September 4-12 in British Columbia (B.C.). The Best-of-7 series will feature National Lacrosse League (NLL) stars from the Western Lacrosse Association (WLA) and Major Series League (MSL).

Young guns Ilija Gajic, Cliff Smith and the New Westminster Salmonbellies currently hold a 1-0 series lead over Dane Dobbie, Curt Malawsky and the Coquitlam Adanacs in the WLA final. The ‘Bellies took Game 1 with a convincing 14-5 victory.

Whichever team wins that West final will host the Mann Cup championships, as the national championship alternates coasts every year.

Representing the Eastern MSL will either be Colin Doyle, Dan Dawson and the Brampton Excelsiors or John Grant Jr., Shawn Evans and the Peterborough Lakers. Brampton currently leads the Best-of-7, 1-0.

Brampton swept New West last year to be crowned as ‘08 Mann Cup champions. Goalie Anthony Cosmo was named series MVP as he posted a GAA under five.

In ‘07, Peterborough became the first-team since 1995 to win the Mann Cup on the road, when they repeated as champions by defeating the Coquitlam Adanacs in six games. John Grant Jr. also repeated as the series’ scoring champ and won the ‘07 Mann Cup MVP.

The Mann Cup dates back to 1925.
