Founders Cup update: day 3 of the 2009 Jr. B lacrosse championship

Eight games in, and your front-runners? Yeah, we’ve found ‘em. A look at what went down yesterday and what’s waiting in the wings for today.

Clarington Green Gaels 16 Port Moody Thunder 6
Credit where credit’s due: the Port Moody Thunder kept it pretty close for a while. After two periods the Green Gaels had amassed just an 8-4 lead. Yes, they may have had double the goals the Thunder did at that point, but come talk to a few Ontario teams and find out what they would’ve given this season to stay that close with Clarington through two. The floodgates creaked open in the third a little bit as Clarington scored eight to Port Moody’s two but hey, glass two-thirds of the way full.
Tip of the hat to Shayne Jackson and Ryan Serville who each had three goals and two assists while Zach Palmer had two and three, and Curtis Knight and Emerson Clark had two and two. For the Thunder, Scott Constable was back on the scene with two goals and one assist, Andrew Hadievangelou put in two, and Cam Patterson and Lyndsey Flynn rounded out the scoring with singles.
Onondaga Redhawks 11 Red Deer Rampage 6
They couldn’t hang on to the top spot in Pool A — that spot belongs to the Calgary Mountaineers and their 35 goals for — but the Onondaga Redhawks solidified second with win number two last night over the thus far winless Red Deer Rampage.
According to my rudimentary math and some incomplete stats, and feel free to email with corrections, Wade Bucktooth had another big night with four goals and three assists, James Cathers had three and one, and Brian Bucktooth had two and two. For the Rampage, it was Darren Kinnear with one goal and three assists, Marshall Just with one and two, and Trevor Howse with two scores. Mitch Bourden and Josh Sullivan kicked in singles to make it six.
Calgary Mountaineers 21 Winnipeg Gryphons 6
Another nailbiter courtesy of the Calgary Mountaineers last night as the Alberta champs came at the Winnipeg reps with a very ugly 82 shots compared to the Gryphons 28. Calgary now sits 2-0 while Winnipeg is 0-2.
For the Mountaineers, Jesse Hunter continued his tear, scoring three and assisting on two, while Sam Bacon exploded for four and one, Cody Friesen ripped three and three, and Austen Biggar, Mike Tyrell and Phil Chilakos each scored two. For the Gryphons, team-leading scorer Mathew Sieben scored two as did Kyle Saunders, and TJ Monkman and Drew Selin each put in one.
Edmonton Warriors 10 Saskatchewan SWAT 5
After a rocky start vs. Clarington the night previous, the Edmonton Warriors rebounded against the familiar foe SWAT, doubling up on them for their first win of the tourney.
Mark Lawrence and Jesse Little each had one for the Warriors, David Lehman had two and two, Adam Stuckless scored one and set up three, Chris Britton had two and three, and does-it-all defender Thomas Chibri added one. Assistant Captain Regan Harding had three goals and one assist for the SWAT, while Kent Murton and Zack Hunter added singles.

3:00 PM MST: Saskatchewan SWAT vs. Onondaga Redhawks
With the first place in Pool A Calgary Mountaineers in tough against the Clarington Green Gaels tonight, here’s a good opportunity for the Redhawks to build up their goals for totals. Of course, Harding, Murton, Hunter and Tandon Naylor should have a little something to say about that as should goaltender Jonathon Fetch, who probably also should have had something to say when I copied the spelling of his last name as Fetscm from the Rocky Mountain lax website in every article this year. Good lord why didn’t somebody stop me.
4:00 PM MST: Winnipeg Gryphons vs. Port Moody Thunder
Keep the penalties under control and the Port Moody Thunder should have this one neatly folded in the bag, but never underestimate the ability of an underdog, especially one that has nothing to prove and everything to gain.
6:00 PM MST: Clarington Green Gaels vs. Calgary Mountaineers
The match-up many in Ontario have been waiting for, we’ll see how Hunter and the high-scoring offense of the Mountaineers fares against Zack Higgins, and what they’ve got up their sleeves to silence Ontario MVP Palmer.
7:00 PM MST: Edmonton Warriors vs. Red Deer Rampage
Considering they’re in the slightly-more-competitive Pool A, the Edmonton Warriors must be well aware that they’re playing a numbers game now so expect to see number one keep Kyle Kowalchuk in net and Lehman, Stuckless, Lawrence and Little doing their damnedest to inflate their goals for and keep the goals against low.
