Minto Cup: Day 3 Rewind, Orangeville & Coquitlam pull out W’s

It was almost 365 days to the day yesterday when the Calgary Mountaineers put a real scare into the eventual ‘08 Minto Cup champs, Orangeville Northmen, dropping a game to the Horn Heads by a slim 7-5 score, again giving a bit of proof that that “gap” between Ontario’s best and Alberta’s best might not be as gaping as once thought (Victoria barely got by Calgary last year too).

Last night, even more proof.

Whether you felt Orangeville was kinda just going through the motions or not, the Edmonton Eclipse almost pulled off the first Alberta over Ontario win on the national Jr. A stage, dropping last night’s round robin close-out to the OLA champs 10-9.

The rest of Day 3, after the jump.

DAY 3

The Skinny Like we said earlir, the Eclipse were just a couple goals shy of making Minto history, again keeper Marc Nano giving the team a solid showing, his 153 shots against easily the most heat any keeper as seen at the tourney this year. “I’m really proud of all our guys,” Eclipse coach Dave Pym told the Canadian Press. “We just came up a little bit short. It wasn’t meant to be. It’s great for Alberta to be involved in the Minto. It gives the kids something to shoot for. We’ve got some fantastic players now in other parts of the country and not just in Ontario and British Columbia.”

  • “There are a lot of midget teams bigger than us, so we’re used to being the small, fast, little quick team that everybody tries to kick the shit out of. We just tried to do what we do best and that is to use our smarts, our speed and our skill, and it paid off.” Matt Sawyer: Orangeville Banner

With a win at this year's Founders Cup, and another close Minto score, is Alberta closing the gap between Ontario and BC?

  • Yeah, for sure. They've made huge strides in recent years. (39%, 96 Votes)
