Minto Cup: Brampton vs. Coquitlam Act II, Final Starts Friday

The Minto final is set and it’s an all-Ontario affair, the Orangeville Northmen and Brampton Excels meeting up again after going to war earlier this month in the OLA championship, that series of course going a full seven gruelling games.

Last night the Excelsiors sent the Coquitlam Adanacs home early, doubling up on the BCJALL champs 12-6, a night earlier the Adanacs beating those same Excels to close out round robin play.

The all-OLA gold medal series is the second time in the last four years that two teams from Ontario battle for the Minto title, the Peterborough Lakers and Six Nations Arrows playing in the final in ‘06.

SEMI-FINAL

Brampton Excelsiors 12 over Coquitlam Adanacs 6

BRA: Cameron Flint (2G, 4A), Andrew Potter (1G, 3A), Dane Stevens (1G, 2A), Michael Burke (3G), Chris Corbeil (2A), Scott Tinning (1G, 1A), Ryan McClelland (2A), Pat Saunders (2A), Steve Fryer (1A), JJ LaForet (1A), Andrew Marcoux (1G), Daniel Patterson (1G), Kyle Andrews (1G), Ben McCullough (1A), Adam McGourty (1G) – Steve Fryer (35SH, 29SV, 6GA)

COQ: Ben McIntosh (1G, 2A), Corbyn Tao (2G, 1A), Robert Church (1G, 1A), Tor Reinholdt (1A), Matthew Dinsdale (1A), Travis Cornwall (1G), Trevor Moore (1A), Garrett McIntosh (1G), Jordan Weir (1A) – Dan Lewis (56SH, 44SH, 12GA)

The Skinny Although the Adanacs were able to pull even with the Excels a couple minutes into the second period, and kept things close throughout, Brampton was dominant when it mattered most and took the game in the final 20 minutes, going to a Minto Cup final for the first time since 1994, when Brampton dropped the series to the New Westminster Salmobellies (4 game to 3), led by the likes of Kevin Haynes, Chris Langdale, Val McGraw, Mike “Hondo” Henderson, Jim Moss, and current Jr. Excels head coach, Brian Beisel. The six goal output by the Adanacs denied JOTY finalist Trevor Moore (Robert Morris) of etching his name atop the Minto Cup record books, although the Coquitlam O ace did finish the tourney with a very respectable 19 points in just four games. Brampton got a huge game on the scoresheet from Cameron Flint (Denver University, former Brampton Battalion [OHL] prospect), whose six points is the highest point total he’s posted since the first regular season game of the year (May 31 vs. Akwesasne 8 Pts). The game also saw the return of everyday regulars to the Excels lineup, including Andrew Potter (Colorado Mammoth), Steve Fryer, Kyle Rubisch (Dowling), Chris Corbeil and of course Flint, all of which had a major impact on last night’s W.

  • “If we have one guy have an off game it’s not going to be good enough against Orangeville. If we come prepared to play and play hard, and above that play smart, they’re beatable.” Brian Beisel: Canadian Press via FAN590
