NLL: Darris Kilgour steps down from General Managing Role and a Bandits update

Before the Bandits made their final pick at 60th overall, Darris Kilgour looked content and happy sitting at the bar in the HSBC Arena’s 100 level Harbour Club. There were several factors that all could add up to Darris’ happiness: The success of the draft, the health of the team, and/or the relief of no longer having to balance both the General Management and Coaching aspects of the team.

Darris made the first announcement about his move to strictly coaching after a bit of talk about the draft. “Derek Graham is going to be the Head GM. I just sort of wanted to focus on coaching. Now I can concentrate on lineups and matchups which I really enjoy. I really feel like my strength is coaching right now.” said Kilgour. He also compared General Management to Chess, and Coaching to Checkers and added “I prefer Checkers.” Darris believes that the team can be more successful with him sticking just to the coaching side of things.

Darris also explained that only 4 guys have definitely earned a starting spot. “Only John Tavares, Kenny Montour, Billy Dee Smith, and Mark Steenhuis are secure, everyone else will have to compete for their spots. One of our biggest problems last year was guys feeling secure in their spots. If you want a spot this year, you’re earning it.”

Kilgour also confirmed that Monster will be the number 1 goaltender heading in to the 2010 season and that “Mikey Thompson completely understands that.”

When asked about John Tavares’ possible retirement, Darris jokingly said “He signed a two year contract!”

Coach Kilgour is also very optimistic with the health of the team. Ken Montour, Roger Vyse, Brett Bucktooth, and John Tavares are all healthy. “We’re very healthy going in to the season which is a first.” Darris said.

So who’s ready for January?
