NLL Girl of the Week bonus season

It might be the offseason for lacrosse and the National Lacrosse League, but do we ever take time off from recognizing the contributions of NLL dancers? Sure, there are no games right now and training camps are still a couple of months away, but we’re going to take advantage of this downtime to revisit a popular feature with our NLL Girls of the Week contest. The league named five NLL dancers during the summer so we’ve set up a sort of min-tournament to get us through until the big season starts. First matchup? It’s Karen of the Boston Blazers and Leslie of the Colorado Mammoth.

Karen comes to the Blazers out of nearby Medford and it’s no real surprise she’s been dancing for a while. You don’t get to the top of the game with just a few years experience, right? She tells NLL.com that she’s been dancing since the age of 3 and her resume includes all sorts of disciplines ranging from hip-hop, jazz, ballet, contemporary, tap and even some ballroom. Can you imagine a ballroom dancing routine during a timeout at a Blazers game? Or any NLL game? Kinda makes ya wonder what the reaction might be.

When Karen’s not dancing, she’s working as an editorial events manager for an IT media company. In her free time, she gave barefoot water-skiing a shot this summer and she says her favorite musical artist is Kenny Chesney. She’s got plans to try out for the 2010 Blazers dance team because if there’s one thing the 2009 season taught her, besides the thrilling action of the NLL games themselves, it’s how awesome the fans are. “Whether we are cheering from the field, in the stands or even mingling before a game or at a promotion, the fans are always enthusiastic and supportive,” she told NLL.com. “It makes cheering for the Blazers even more fun.”

Out in Denver, Leslie’s got two years experience with the Wild Bunch that helps cheer on the Colorado Mammoth. She’s a registered dental hygienist and is quick to remind anyone reading this to brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once. Sound advice, no matter where that’s coming from. And kinda like Karen up in Boston, Leslie’s big draw to NLL games is the fans and how excited they get at games, especially during the pre-game introductions. “All the fans are on their feet and we come out onto the field on a Harley,” she told NLL.com. “Nothing replaces that feeling of excitement you get every game.”

Karen’s a country music fan too and she likes to work on her scrapbook during her spare time. She’d like to start a family at some point but until that happens, she’s perfectly happy with the Colorado Mammoth family she’s gotten to know over the last two seasons. “Everyone who is a part of this organization really cares about the team and what they do. It has been such a pleasure to work with everyone involved.”

So there ya have it, fans. The NLL Girl of the Week contest, although in an abbreviated form, is back to sate your appetites until the big season starts this winter. And just to make an editorial note, with just 5 contestants named, we drew names from a hat to see which dancer would get the bye and that’ll go to Corina of the Rochester Knighthawks. So we plugged her into the bracket take on the winner of the next matchup. We’ll detail that more next week.

As for today, it’s time to get your vote on. Check out the links that include bios and more pics, then cast your vote today.
