OLA Hall of Fame honors host of Juniors

The Class of 2009 for the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame has long since been announced, but with the induction date approaching this Saturday, it’d be cool to give some proper props to those being honored. And make no mistake, there are some Junior lacrosse heavyweights earning some well-deserved accolades. From Gilbert Bomberry to Derek Keenan and Zenon Lipinski to Bob Luey, they are part of a group of 10 who will be honored this Saturday in St. Catharines, Ontario. All the information you need for times and tickets and location can be found right here.

So just who are the new Hall of Famers? Fans will remember Gilbert Bomberry of Six Nations as top-notch scorer with Six Nations and as a President’s Cup champion in 1967 and 1969. Larry Galbraith has been a driving force with the Fergus Thistles for more than 35 years, and Sherwin Paul Henhawk was another solid player with Six Nations.

At Akwesasne, Mark Jacobs is recalled for his dominant defense and Derek Keenan was the Junior A MVP in 1979 with the Oshawa Green Gaels and has made a name for himself as a successful National Lacrosse League player and coach. Zenny Lipinski has worked behind the scenes in Brampton for years, and Bob Luey has been an instrumental member of the Junior Lacrosse Council with Minto Cup championships with the St. Catharines Athletics in 1990, 2001 and 2003.

Michael Montour of Six Nations has been a succesful Junior A and Junior B coach with teams from Six Nations and St. Catharines. The late Ronnie Roundtree of Akwesasne made his mark as a player in the 1940s and 1950s before turning to the fine craft of making hickory sticks. And finally, Wally Thorne of St. Catharines will always be remembered for his abilities with teams in St. Catharines, Brampton and Whitby, winning a Minto Cup with Brampton in 1959 and being named the Junior A MVP in 1960 with Whitby.

Congrats to one and all on this fine honor. A reception for family and friends is set to begin Saturday at 12:30 p.m. with formal ceremonies to follow at 6 p.m. at the Quality Parkway Hotel in St. Catharines.
