Whitby’s Cockerton to join his brother with Cavaliers in Virginia

The University of Virginia Cavaliers liked what they saw in Matt Cockerton so much, they went out and got another. Mark Cockerton, Matt’s younger brother, was introduced recently as a member of the Class of 2014 recruiting class for the Cavs. He’ll join Matt, currently a freshman at UVA, once he’s done with school at Monsignor Paul Dwyer, giving the Cavs a pair of attackment out of Oshawa. Matt and Mark certainly have lacrosse in their blood, following in the footsteps of their father, Stanley, a 2003 inductee to the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame and former NCAA scoring champ who played at North Carolina State.

As it stands now, it looks as though the Cockerton boys will join Garett Ince (Oakville) as the only Canadians on the UVA roster and the Cavs know they’ve landed a finisher in Mark. He led the Whitby Warriors Junior A club in 2009 with 84 points in 21 regular-season games (44 goals, 40 assists).

One thing’s for sure: Mark and Matt have some big footsteps to follow. Stanley made his junior mark with the Green Gaels of Oshawa before taking his game to the majors for the Brooklin Redmen. On the field, Stanley led N.C. State to its only NCAA Tournament appearnce in 1979. He also was a member of the Canadian National field team that won the 1978 title and was inducted into the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1997.
