Current Washington Stealth assistant coach, Rick Lum, has been appointed the British Columbia Junior A Lacrosse League’s new commissioner for the 2010 summer season.
Lum, who National Lacrosse League fans will better recognize as a former veteran official prior to joining the Stealth’s bench last month, spent this past summer on the Jr. A Coquitlam Adanacs’s bench under Dan Perreault, the team winning the BC title, representing the province in Brampton, Ontario at the ‘09 Minto Cup.
The former nine-year pro ref replaces Al Lang as the league’s boss, Lang still remaining with the BCJALL in the role of league president.
Earlier this off-season, Lum’s former Jr. team, the Adanacs, announced that they’d be swapping head coaches after their 20-1 regular season, a season that later included an early Minto exit to close things out. Perreault was not brought back, Coquitlam GM Ken Wood opting for former Minto winning coach and recent Champion’s Cup winner, Curt Malawsky, who is also serving as an assistant GM and coach with the Calgary Roughnecks this winter.
Perreault currently serves as the Colorado Mammoth’s assistant (offensive) coach, the team recently announcing their 23-man roster, days later taking the Minnesota Swarm 10-7 in exhibition action. The Mammoth assistant was brought on board with the New Westminster Salmonbellies Jr. A side shortly after news broke of his exclusion in Coquitlam.

Kirkby comeback – “He’s (Rob Kirkby) playing better than we expected, and he’s getting better every time he hits the floor. Our defence is looking pretty good. I have to admit, they’re looking really good.” – Brad Bannister (Calgary Sun)
Captain McElroy – With much speculation of who’ll be team captain in Edmonton this year after a head-to-toe reorganization of the franchise, one thing at least will remain the same this winter, Chris McElroy owning a sweater with a C stitched in the chest. “There’s been a lot of changes but I’m as optimistic as I’ve ever been with the group of guys that we have and the coaching staff. I really believe in this group and think Rush fans will be excited to see the product on the floor this year.” – McElroy (Edmonton Sun)
Swarm injured - The Minnesota Swarm lost both Andrew Watt and Richard Morgan to injuries during their exhibition game on Friday night. “The preseason is meant to help figure out who your best players are and we took a step closer to knowing who we want to have in our starting lineup barring injuries. We battled through some adversity tonight and its good to get that out of the way during training camp.” – Marty O’Neill (Minnesota Swarm)
Gilbert chat – One of last year’s most impressive rookie defenders, really bringing it on in the second half of the season, the Toronto Rock’s Jeff Gilbert agrees with most of the guys that hit up NLL Insider’s 20Q this past summer, kill the clock short handed in the NLL. (Toronto Rock)
