NLL Insider Top 50: Gavin Prout #17

At this time last year, Gavin Prout was the captain of a Colorado Mammoth team looking to build off a respectible 9-7 regular season, working their way back to a Champion’s Cup final the Woollies were hoisting over their heads just (a then) three short seasons ago.

A lot has changed since opening day 365 days ago, both for Prout and the Mammoth.

Prout, one of the sport’s top power forwards, was moved twice over this past off-season, first to the Rochester Knighthawks, and then shortly after to the Edmonton Rush, where he very much remains as the Rush attempt to change their fortunes.

The Mammoth of course barely slipped into the ‘09 playoffs, setting franchise low offensive production numbers that likely led to the paragraph above, although it’s tough to point the finger at Prout for what happened in Denver last year (unavoidable injuries at the top of the list).

Either way, Prout and the Mammoth have parted ways, the two first coming together after the New York Saints closed up shop and Prout and longtime teammate and friend, Gee Nash, were granted free agency, hooking up in Denver as two key ball players over the years.

Those season are of course now over, Prout in Alberta and Nash likely done in Colorado as well, currently on the team’s physically unable to perform list.

Although still an impact player live few others, Prout’s numbers did drop-off considerably last winter, his ‘08 92-point total dropping almost 20 full digits, his lowest single season numbers since playing 15 games with the Saints in his sophomore year. It was the first time since ‘06 that Prout didn’t lead the franchise in scoring.

Leading an offense with the likes of Ryan Ward and Ryan Powell in Edmonton, a roster that looks more Portland Lumberjax than it does Rush this year, much is expected from Prout in 2010 as Edmonton looks for him to have the same impact he had the last time he changed pro sweaters.

And since monster hits were a theme over the past year, check out Prout’s layout of Shawn Cable from a couple years back below, still considered by many to be one of the best bowl-overs of all-time…

Fact: The Other player that joined the Mammoth when the floor fell out in New York? Nick Carlson, who is one of just four players still with the franchise when they setup shop in Denver, joining Brian Langtry, Tom Ethington and John Gallant as the longest serving current Mammoth players. Off-season pickup Chad Culp was also a member of that torn apart Saints roster in ‘03.
