Lacrosse Links: Clock Strikes Midnight on Washington’s Perfect Season

While there weren’t as many games on the slate as there would be on a typical Saturday evening, there was nothing lacking from the excitement or story line department as the undefeated Washington Stealth were taken down, the Buffalo Bandits fought to keep hopes of a playoff berth alive and John Grant and Pat O’Toole each reached career milestones in leading the K-Hawks to a win.

Minnesota 16, Washington 12

Tim Campeau scored four goals and Ryan Benesch added three goals and three assists to lead the Minnesota Swarm to a 16-12 win over the then undefeated Washington Stealth at home. The Swarm got off to a 5-1 start before Paul Rabil made it 5-2 to close the first quarter. Things heated up between the two teams as Washington goalie Tyler Richards and Minnesota forward Sean Pollock threw punches that led to a bench-clearing brawl between the two teams. The Swarm controlled the pace of the game, leading by as many as five goals in the fourth quarter. Lewis Ratcliff’s four goals and an assist and Rhys Duch’s two goals and three assists led the Stealth.

Buffalo 13, Philadelphia 11

A goal from John Tavares with just over three minutes left in the game cemented the win for Buffalo – Tavares finished with two goals and four assists and Mark Steenhuis notched a pair of goals to go along with six assists in the win. Bandits goalie Angus Goodleaf stepped in for Ken Montour after the Wings scored five unanswered goals to start the game. He made 37 saves on 43 shots in the win. With the victory, the Bandits keep their chances of reaching the postseason alive while the Wings, now sitting at the bottom of the division at 1-5, certainly have their work cut out for them.

Rochester 11, Boston 9

A Rochester win over Boston Saturday afternoon means the Knighthawks are sitting in third place in the East Division while the Blazers are a spot behind them in fourth. John Grant’s goal with 2:45 remaining in the third quarter marked his 411th career goal, moving him ahead of Paul Gait into third place on the league’s all-time scoring list. Grant paced the game with three goals and three assists and Craig Point added four goals. Goalie Pat O’Toole stopped 41 of 50 shots to earn his 100th career win.
