Lacrosse Links: Minnesota Swarms, Rochester mans-up and Boston wins the longest game in NLL history

A busy Saturday night saw Rochester pull away from Philadelphia, Minnesota take a big win over Colorado and the Blazers top Orlando in what is now the longest game in league history (over 76 minutes of action!) Want to know how it went down? Follow along…

Rochester 12, Philadelphia 6

John Jiloty was on hand (read his live blog here) to catch the Knighthawks pull away with a big second half Saturday night in Philadelphia. Gary Gait led the way with four goals and Shawn Williams had two goals and four assists to key the victory, which improved Rochester to 5-3 on the season.

Special teams were the big key for this game, as the Knighthawks went 8-for-10 with the powerplay and the Wings hit on just one of seven opportunities, dropping to 1-6.

Philadelphia got a goal and two assists from Dan Teat and Kyle Walles (2G, 1A) and John Christmas (1G, 2A) also had good nights. Geoff Snider had a dominant 15-for-19 performance at the X and gobbled 18 loose balls, but it wasn’t enough to get the Wings back to the win column.

Boston 12, Orlando 11 (OT)

Sean Morris became the answer of a trivia question on Saturday night, scoring the game-winning goal in what is now the longest game in NLL history, leading Boston to a double-overtime victory that took over 76 minutes to resolve.

The goal was Morris’ only score on the night (he also had an assist), with Jamie Rooney and Dan Dawson leading Boston with a goal and five assists apeice. Daryl Veltman was the leading scorer for the Blazers, scoring three to go with his two assists. Anthony Cosmo had 36 saves playing all 76 minutes.

Orlando was paced by Jordan Hall’s two goal, five assist day, with Pat Maddalena (2G, 3A) and Casey Powell (1G, 4A) also playing key roles. Matt Vinc played the entire game in net and made 46 saves for the Titans.

Minnesota 15, Colorado 5

The Swarm got their first-ever victory over the Mammoth in style Saturday night, turning a 3-1 first quarter deficit into a 6-4 halftime lead before pulling away with a 9-1 second half run to the victory.

Callum Crawford had four goals and five assists for Minnesota, which also had huge showings from Ryan Benesch (3G 6A) and Aaron Wilson (2G, 6A) in the win. Kevin Ross and Sean Pollock also chipped in two goals and two assists each.

Nenad Gajic was the only Colorado player to net more than two points, assisting on three goals in the evening. Brian Langtry and Jed Prossner had a goal and an assist each for Colorado, which was held scoreless for the final 28 minutes.
