OK, so maybe the Division II stage for men’s lacrosse isn’t as bright as some of the others. And maybe playing for Bentley University doesn’t draw the ink some of the other NCAA schools out there might. But know this about attackman Kevin Gould: The kid can play. With the way the game’s exploded in recent years, the talent pool is deeper than ever, so when a kid walks on to campus and proceeds to be the only freshman on the team to start every game that season, you know he’s got some skills. And that’s exactly the kind of thing Gould is hoping National Lacrosse League execs notice when it comes time to draft this fall, because the numbers didn’t stop after just 1 season.

Gould led the Falcons in scoring in 3 of his 4 seasons. And the year he didn’t? That was his sophomore season, when he was second on the team. He capped his NCAA career this past spring with a team-high 42 points on 17 goals and 25 assists. That was enough to earn him a spot as a second-team All-American, and that turned into becoming a Major League Lacrosse draft pick for the Boston Cannons. Boston selected Gould with the No. 39 overall pick, making him the only non-Division I player selected by the Cannons.

He finished his career at Bentley fifth on the all-time list of assists with 82, which really is no surprise given his background in soccer and hockey. Praised by coaches for his vision and is off-ball ability, Gould’s a young attackman with skills grounded in a genuine desire to learn the indoor game. And that, perhaps, is asset numero uno coaches look for when building through the draft.
