NLL entry draft: Hello, my name is … Ken Clausen

Ken Clausen

You’ve seen him, yes you have. If you’ve watched even just a little bit of NCAA lacrosse the past couple of seasons, you’ve seen him. Not just because the University of Virginia games happen to be on television quite often, but because when you see the Cavaliers on TV, he stands out. Sure, it might be the flow he’s rockin that sets him apart, but once you pay attention, you quickly realize that Ken Clausen has more than flow. He’s got game. And the two are not mutually exclusive. All over his third of the field, Clausen’s comin’ at fools with that flow not far behind and were it not for the facemasks on opposing middies and attackmen, we’d surely see the eyes of fear. Because that’s the kinda game Clausen brings.

Big and strong, Clausen’s game is no secret. But opponents have no choice but to go up against him and more often than not, they lose. The close defenseman was a 3-time first-team All-American and honorable mention his freshman season. This past spring, he was one of the 5 finalists for the Tewaaraton.

All of that led to his being drafted by MLL’s Denver Outlaws, where he’s managed to crack a solid lineup to play in 4 games as a rook. With roster spots so prized in that league, there are no favors and playing time is awarded and earned, not just given so he’s doing something right. Maybe it’s his cover ability with his quickness. Maybe it’s his takeaway and checking ability with the strong stick. Maybe it’s his undying passion to win that makes him a leader on and off the field. Word has it he can bend an ear or two in the locker room and the guys not only listen, but they respect. And that’s huge.

Either way, the kid’s got the right combination and skill set and what’s more, he’s got the attitude to match. Lots of guys have lacrosse skills. But not a lot have that intangible attitude, and that may just be what NLL execs are looking at in Clausen as they strive to bolster a defense.
