NLL Entry Draft: Hello My Name Is… Kevin Wallin

Kevin Wallin, Edmonton Miners
Kevin Wallin, Edmonton Miners

He’s just come off an MVP caliber season in Alberta’s Junior A (split with the province’s Senior B half) loop.

He put up digits in the scoring race, winning it by miles, with a point total that hasn’t been seen for several seasons, leaving his signature in the province’s record books.

And like Danny Farmer a few weeks back, he’s part of a new wave of Alberta lacrosse ball players looking to attack the pro game in coming seasons.

He is the Edmonton Miners’ Kevin Wallin, an Insider Junior of the Year Honourable Mention this week and a pro prospect to keep your eye on at this year’s National Lacrosse League entry draft and beyond.

Two summers back Wallin was voted by Alberta based coaches as the Junior games most underrated player in an Insider year-end vote. Now he’s easily one of the best and on absolutely everyone’s radar, named one of Alberta’s most dangerous offensive weapons in the same poll as well, a scouting report by one unnamed coach in the province describing Wallin as a, “Very intelligent player that puts himself into position to score what look like greasy goals. He is a player who can find the net when most needed and can finish.”

Even more polished, respected and well rounded since that ‘08 poll, Wallin has an amazing lacrosse IQ and has skills both with the ball in his stick and off-ball, considered one of the province’s top off-ball workers.

What do you feel your greatest asset is that would allow you to translate your game to the NLL?
I’ve grown up playing the indoor game so I’m accustomed to the fast pace and tight quarters of the game.

Couple words to describe your game?
I’m a threat both on and off ball.

What role/position do you see yourself playing in the NLL?
Offense

What current or former NLLer would you most closely compare or model your game after?
I’d say Jeff Zywicki. He’s not flashy but he gets the job done both on and off ball.

Your greatest accomplishment during your lacrosse career?
Having been a part of three Minto Cups with the Miners and winning the Alberta scoring race this year.

Anything else to add?
I can play in any NLL city and I think I’m a good leader both on and off the floor.
