Lacrosse Links: Lively discussions over on the NLL Forums

There’s a solid thread going right now over on the NLLInsider.com Forums discussing last week’s article about whether the Champions Cup should be a series or a one-game final. This, friends, is the stuff that the forums were built for. Drop in and throw your thoughts (and vote) in if you’ve got a free minuteREAD MORE »

Vinitage photo project brings lacrosse history to life

We’re all lacrosse nuts ’round these parts, but some of us are history nuts too and that’s why it’s so cool to give ya’ll a heads-up about this project that Tim Prothero is working on. Tim’s got The Vintage LaX Project up on-line at his Flickr account and if you head on over to view these photos, make sure you’ve got some time. There are a bunch. “If you played lacrosse between 1968 and 1985 in the OLA or pros … you may find yourself, no matter what level you played,” Prothero told me in an e-mail. It’s a work of beauty and includes great photos like this one of Adam Oates, who obviously went on to NHL stardom. But there’s more. Plenty more. READ MORE »

Fan Poll: Growth of the National Lacrosse League

One of the more interesting news items we’ve seen this season was word that sports agency giant IMG has an interest in buying the media and sponsorship rights of the National Lacrosse League for the next five years.

Every potential business deal comes equipped with a list of pros and cons, but if it’s a building block for growing the game of indoor lacrosse and legitimizing the league in the eyes of the sports-going public, then what’s the problem?

Fan Poll: Veltman and Finneran look like they could be HOFers in ‘09

veltman_smaller_300163.jpg

This week’s fan poll proved a few things.

One, a couple dudes from Victoria and Ashton have way, way, way too much time on their hands. And two, Jim Veltman looks like an overwhelming favorite for entrance into the Hall of Fame in 2009.

After you scrape-away all the “extra” votes from the readers that really need to find a hobby, the former Rock captain and current team assistant coach got by far the most love.

The buzz is he’s also the guy the league is hearing about the most in their plea to the fans for who they’d like to see inducted this winter too. READ MORE »

Fan Poll: Who should be included in the next HOF class?

veltman2_3565.jpg

Thought is was pretty cool for the NLL to reach out to fans last week while trying to figure out who should be included in the league’s next Hall of Fame class.

We over at NLL Insider put together a short list of players we thought should be included on a ballot for guys that might be on the radar for consideration.

After the jump, check out the cast we’d give a look for entry into the Hall. READ MORE »

Fan Poll: Past pros make the best head honchos, right?

2267468073_eca6096779_m.jpg

Although the vote was fairly split on all three questions we threw at you guys this week, the consensus was that a pretty big bullet to have on your resume for coaches in this league is a past playing gig in the NLL or MILL.

Like we said on Monday, nine of the league’s 13 teams have coaches that have played in the NLL, a ratio that has the NLL well above most other leagues in North America.

The thing is, even though box lacrosse has been played in Canada in small sweat soaked barns forever, the NLL is a different beast than what happens up here in the summer. READ MORE »

Fan Poll: The next player to coach success story?

2257376008_1fcab16596_m.jpg

Not sure how many newer fans and followers of the game realize how many of the NLL’s current head coaches have actually played in the league in years past.

Nine of the league’s 13 teams in 2009 have coaches that had played in the league previous. The other four have pretty extensive playing careers up here in Canada too.

Current coaches Troy Cordingley (Calgary), Darris Kilgour (Buffalo), Bob Hamley (Edmonton), Derek Keenan (Portland), and Jamie Batley (Chicago) all played pretty important gigs with the Buffalo Bandits during the 90’s, while Dewey Jacobs (Minnesota) was a long time Rochester Knighthawk, Glenn Clark (Toronto) obviously won a bunch of Cups with the Toronto Rock, Tom Ryan (Boston) is starting his pro coaching career in the same city he broke into the MILL in, and even new Rochester head honcho, Paul Suggate, played way back in the mid 70’s for Maryland in the old school NLL. Fan Poll: MLLers in the NLL

The LA Riptide's over the top skilled attackman Chazz Woodson. Could he cut it in the NLL?
The LA Riptide's over the top skilled attackman Chazz Woodson. Could he cut it in the NLL?

With all the talk of Joe Walters potentially ending up with the Knighthawks and Rattlers keep Brett Queener showin’ his stuff at this past weekend’s Boston Blazers camp, this week we wanted to know what Major League Lacrosse ball players you’d like to see make the jump to the NLL.

Usually the Americans that land a spot in the NLL do it straight outta college via the Entry Draft, but with the NLL gaining in popularity, holding onto a rare long term CBA and potentially opening up shop in more US markets (not to mention plans of an NLL Field League), will more current MLLers start trying to make the jump to pro box?

After the jump, let us know who you’d like to see coming over to the dark side in this week’s Fan Poll…

Fan Poll: This year’s best second year guys

2392637852_9b57ab1a9f_m.jpg

In keeping with our recent theme of sophmores in the NLL, this week’s fan poll is gonna centre around just that, next year’s second year pros.

Will Craig Point and Jordan Hall continue to help dominate their team and league scoring charts?

Will defensive studs Tyler Codron and Mike Carnegie continue to be key ball players in their team’s own end?

Will Dane Dobbie finally find a spot on Calgary’s pretty deep O and produce like he did this past summer in the WLA?

Who will be this year’s soph studs and slumps? Let us know after the jump… READ MORE »

Fan Poll: Nothing but positives on Gait’s return to the NLL

gg.jpg

Although there was some apprehension over Gary Gait’s return to the NLL, after this week’s fan poll, it seems like it was pretty short lived.

For those that missed it, this week we asked you guys a series of Q’s centered around Gait’s return to the game and the impact it would have on the Rochester Knighthawks, the NLL and Gait himself too.

Although there was some concern over the Hawks bringing Gary back, you certainly wouldn’t have thought that based on what you told us this week.

Here’s a quick breakdown on how this week’s fan poll shook-out… READ MORE »
