From Inside Lacrosse Magazine: Stealth living the high life

It's a rough life, but somebody's got to live it (Jared Chandler)
It's a rough life, but somebody's got to live it (Jared Chandler)

A while back, during the NLL regular season, IL learned that the San Jose Stealth had a group of guys set up living together in the scenic hills of northern California.

These players didn’t have ‘day jobs’ to go along with their playing duties - save for some equipment manufacturer rep duties or coaching responsibilities, so we were curious what exactly it was that these fellas did to fill their days.

So, we decided to send them a camera and have them document exactly what it’s like to be in your 20’s, a professional athlete and living the high life.

Check out what we got back, and also check out a photo gallery from Jared Chandler on IL’s Photo Zone. READ MORE »

Inside Lacrosse August Issue: Mascot Showdown

So the Minto Cup will be on us before we know it, and teams likes the Adanacs and Salmonbellies will be vying for a trophy Canadian laxers would gladly spill liters of blood to hold. But no matter who takes home the hardware, we’re all winners by getting exposed to the awesomest side of indoor lacrosse: crazy mascots. Begging the question, who has the craziest mascot?

The WLA has the early edge in the semifinals (Coquitlam  vs. Orangeville, Nanaimo vs. Wallaceburg), so put in your vote to see if the Northmen and the Red Devils can make a late charge before the finals are unveiled later in the week.

Future NLL star in the Card?

There’s a bright future in the Card. That’s the talk making the rounds up north whenever the discussion turns toward future lacrosse greatness. National Lacrosse League fans would be wise to keep in mind the name Jay Card, ’cause dude’s a player.

card.jpg

He’s at Hofstra now and the team’s second-leading scorer notched the overtime winner against Johns Hopkins not too long ago. The point of all this? You’re getting a chance to drop a question on the kid from Caledon, Ontario. He’s gonna be the subject of Inside Lacrosse’s Fan Zone, so think of a Q and click here to see where you can get your question submitted. Deadline’s in April 13, so don’t delay.

Card’s been making a name for himself on the midget circuit in Ontario and expectations are even greater for him this summer, where he’s expected to balance time between the Junior loop in Orangeville as well as Canada’s U19 national field team. In the box, he’s regarded as a legit offensive talent who did some schooling at The Hill Academy, which is run by Portland LumberJax star Brodie Merrill and his family. Instruction doesn’t get any better than that, does it?

2008 preseason players and dancers survey

The dirt on this upcoming season, straight from the guys in the trenches

Labor Disputes. Dispersal Drafts. Franchise contractions. Last-second schedules. It was an offseason of turmoil for the NLL, one that league and labor officials would love to put behind them.

The players? With all the back-room negotiating over and done, they just want to get out and hit somebody - though questions linger about the offseason issues, and how they’ll affect the NLL and the players in the future.

Heading into this heavily scrutinized ‘08 season, IL asked more than 100 NLL players to offer their insights on the new season - from on-the-field issues to their thoughts on the recent labor quagmire. As always, they were brutally honest, and incredibly insightful.

One-Year Anniversary: Colin Doyle Trade

Tomorrow marks the one-year anniversary of Colin Doyle getting the phone call that he was being traded from the Toronto Rock to the San Jose Stealth. It went down as one of the biggest trades in league history: the ’05 NLL MVP being shipped from the only team he’s ever played for to San Jose for Ryan Benesch (the No. 1 pick in the ’06 Entry Draft) and a group of young, talented players. We had Andrew Lupton of the National Post in Toronto do an in-depth look at this trade a year later: why it happened, what it’s done for both teams and what it means for the future. Definitely was a hot-button issue for a lot of people around the league, but what Andrew wrote was, in my opinion, a very insightful and even piece for Inside Lacrosse Magazine. This article, along with this sidebar, appears in IL’s January issue.

Curious to read people’s opinions on this one, so be sure to post your thoughts at Wingszone.com. READ MORE »

2008 NLL Power Play Evaluations

This information appears in Volume 12, Issue 1 of Inside Lacrosse Magazine. For more stats, analysis and expert predictions for the 2008 NLL season, pick up a copy today!

Inside Lacrosse magazine takes a look at the upcoming NLL season and ranks the teams in power play scoring potential. Read on and see how we think the teams will measure up in 2008.

Rochester

Ranked: 1st
67 g / 114 opp / 59%
The NLL’s best offense had the best power play last year, but this season they go in without Accursi’s 12 power-play goals. The Knighthawks went with primarily three lefties last year, leaving two spots between the Evans brothers and Accursi. Shawn Evans was the odd man out, but this year he gets that spot and will step in to keep the unit running smoothly. Defenses are so scared of Grant that it opens up plenty of room for the other guys and they all get great looks. Depth may be a bit of a problem, but look for face-off man Steve Hoar to step up if called upon.

2007 Power Play Goals:
Sh. Evans (6)
K. Millin (2)
Sc. Evans (16)
S. Williams (15)
J. Grant (14)

Buffalo

“The goaltending will be a question. For years it was a given with Chugger in goal; now Thompson has to fill those shoes. He’s a good goalie but it will be interesting to see how he carries the load for an entire season. … The key is their discipline. If they start taking dumb penalties, they can really hurt themselves. This is a one-goal league and they have to stay out of the box to win close games. … They did well to get Sanderson and Llord a bit later in the draft. Llord will be good, and you can’t go wrong with the Sanderson bloodline. … Offensively, where Rochester’s guys need to have the ball in their stick for extended periods of time, Tavares can have the ball in his stick for literally a minute and a half a game, and he’ll have six scores on you. You get nervous when he doesn’t have the ball, because you know it’s coming. … People talk about Buffalo as undisciplined, taking penalties, but I see an extremely disciplined team on both ends. … They ask a lot of McCready and Steenhuis.”

IL’s January Issue Has Dropped

I hesitate to post this blog for two reasons. One, Brodie’s post was hilarious and I don’t want to bump it down a notch. It’s one of the more insightful, hysterical looks into a pro sports team that I’ve ever read. If you haven’t checked it out, read it to the end: the punch line is classic.

Two, I don’t want this site to become a shill for Inside Lacrosse Magazine (well, I do but I know that’s not smart). But given that our NLL Preview Issue just came out, I’d be crazy not to drop it on you guys now that it’s available.

We chose to focus on Casey Powell as our cover story. The progress he’s made in the NLL has been incredibly impressive. Let’s be honest, if he can turn a guy like Pat Coyle into a fan, he’s made some progress. If Casey hadn’t have missed the final three games of last season, he would have topped 100 points. That’s pretty elite territory.

Shooting from the Hip with John Christmas

With Boston Cannons and Philadelphia Wings star John Christmas

On The Field

You helped Virginia win the 2003 NCAA title with two goals and an assist - what was that like?
That was one of the best games of my life. Everyone dreams of winning a national championship. The whole thing was surreal.

Your last collegiate game was pretty heart-breaking, Hopkins scoring with two seconds left to force overtime and eventually winning. Not to bring back bad memories but does that game still linger?
Sometimes. A lot of folks say it was the best game they’ve ever seen. It was a great game for lacrosse. I thought it was great too, and it is a shame we came away with a loss. We would have played Duke afterwards. After the game I did a presser [press conference] with me and Dom, we went to the tailgate and it was surreal because I knew my college career was over.

Game Weapon: Toronto Forward Josh Sanderson

This article appears in Volume 12, Issue 1 of Inside Lacrosse Magazine. To subscribe to the magazine, click here.

Ironically nicknamed ‘Shooter’ despite ranking fourth all-time in the NLL in assists, Sanderson dukes it out with his small 5-6, 160-pound frame. And he’s done a lot more than merely get by. In 2006, he led the entire league with 98 points, and last season, he followed that up by leading the Rock with 85 points. During his 10 seasons in the league, he’s compiled impressive totals of 250 goals and 469 assists. We asked Shooter to tell us how he prepares his Weapon of Choice.

HEAD
I’ve used an STX Profile for the last however-many years. I’ve used an X2 also. The profile is similar to the X2: it’s got a little pinch on it. I’ll use anything that’ll help me score more, so hopefully they’ll come out with one of those soon. … I pinched the last one a little but I don’t prefer that too much. I don’t doctor them up. There’s less room for looseballs or catching if you have a real tight pinch.

Inside Lacrosse Looking For Freelancers

Inside Lacrosse Magazine October issue
Inside Lacrosse Magazine October issue

With Face-Off Yearbook less than a week away from going to the press (next Wednesday could not come any sooner — thanks to all the coaches who waited to the last minute to send in their info: Good times), it’s almost that time to turn our attention to the ensuing lacrosse seasons, college and pro.

That’s right, it’s barely November, but in the media world it’s never too early to plan ahead. So it’s with that thought that Inside Lacrosse offers this open invitation for any writers, photographers and videographers looking to contribute this winter (NLL season is back on, you may have heard) and spring.

We’re looking for feature writers for Inside Lacrosse Magazine, game-story writers for InsideLacrosse.com, people to help out with score updates during spring college games, photographers and videographers to shoot games and lifestyle content - basically anyone interested in helping out with lacrosse coverage, while getting their work published at the same time.

If a moron in my fantasy football league can spend hours out of his week crafting a weekly update newsletter for the rest of the nerds, there have to be more people out there interested in getting their work published, on a website that gets millions of unique visitors and in a magazine that is distributed on major newsstands throughout North America.

So, if you’re feeling it, drop us a line with a resume and some work samples. We’re in the process of organizing our winter and spring coverage as we speak, so don’t delay. Some idiot fantasy football geek might take your spot.
