Fan finds his “Rattlers” in good hands with Toronto Nationals

Well, I had to do it. I had to get some friends together and grab my son — and video camera — and get up to Toronto to see our beloved Rochester Rattlers, who have become the Toronto Nationals of Major League Lacrosse. I knew I would miss seeing the same team that I hugged and high-fived on the scorched surface of Harvard Stadium in August 2008, but making the trip helped me reconnect and hopefully the video after the jump will help you, too. MLL Live In-Game Blog: Long Island Lizards at Toronto Nationals

The Toronto Nationals will put their prefect 2-0 record on the line against the 1-1 Long Island Lizards tonight at BMO field. The Nationals will look to continue their string of strong individual performances highlighted by week 1’s Bud Light Offensive Player of the Week Merrick Thomson, who dropped 7 goals against Baltimore, and last week’s Defensive Player of the Week Brodie Merrill who managed to hold Matt Striebel pointless.

The Lizards should be a worthy adversary for Toronto with their only blemish coming from a heartbreaking loss to Baltimore, the same team Toronto narrowly defeated by a single goal in their inaugural game, in overtime last week.

Matt Danowski, who leads the team with 6 points (2g, 4a) and the Lizards’ offense which also includes Stephen Berger (4g, 1a) and Chris Fiore (3g, 1a), should pose some problems for Toronto’s defense who may add recent defensive draftees, Ontario native Sid Smith (Syracuse) and LSM Mike Timms (Virginia), to tonight’s game.

Whitby, Ontario native Zack Greer will make his MLL debut in front of his home crowd where he will reunite with former Duke teammate Matt Danowski. The Lizards organization must hope the duo will be able to re-ignite the explosive offensive force they used to dominate Division 1 lacrosse for four seasons.

Sid Smith is also confirmed to be playing today. He will be wearing number 59.

Merrick Thomson leads Toronto Nationals to first Major League Lacrosse win

A little thing like not qualifying for the Champion’s Cup couldn’t keep a number of NLL stars out of action last night, as Wings forward Merrick Thomson hit up the Washington Bayhawks for seven goals, giving the Toronto Nationals their first Major League Lacrosse win. Fellow Philly player Jordan Levine scored two including the game-winner, and San Jose’s Jeff Zywicki and Rochester’s Joe Walters each had a hattrick. “We were just leaving guys un-marked underneath of us, and they made us pay for it,” said Bayhawks coach John Tucker.

Major League Lacrosse’s Toronto Nationals name Dave Huntley head coach

You can add one more familiar face to the list of NLL stars you’ll be seeing this summer at BMO Field as the Toronto Nationals have named Dave Huntley the new head coach.

In addition to his current two-year tenure as the head coach of the Philadelphia Wings, Huntley is a four-time coach of Team Canada field, most recently serving as an assistant to the gold medal-winning 2006 team. He was also an assistant to the MLL’s Baltimore Bayhawks, guiding them to a league championship in 2005. READ MORE »
