Playoff intensity heats up MSL, plus the links

It’s playoff time in Major Series Lacrosse and you know what that means. Yeah, emotions. Boiling over. It’s a fine balance, playing with enough intensity to fire up your team and at the same time, keeping those emotions in check. But it looks like the Lakers weren’t able to hold it in and it cost them to the tune of 59 penalty minutes, including a bench-clearing incident, in a 14-7 Game 4 loss Sunday night to Six Nations at the Memorial Centre. Still, the Lakers hold a 3-1 lead in this semifinal series while the Brampton Excelsiors hold a 2-1 lead in their semifinal series with the St. Regis Indians. READ MORE »

MSL semifinals series are set, plus the links

So we’re good to go with the Major Series Lacrosse semifinals, and more excited we cannot be because we’ve got some superb lacrosse in front of us. The St. Regis Indians locked up their spot in the semis with what looked to be a thrilling 11-10 double-overtime victory over the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks on Saturday night. That sets up their series with Brampton. In the other semifinal, we’ve got a dandy with the Peterborough Lakers taking on the Six Nations Chiefs and if it’s fireworks you want, fireworks are pretty much what we can count on in this semifinal matchup. Steve Toll’s blogging, and it’s LEGIT

What’s Steve Toll of the Rochester Knighthawks thinking these days? Well, as he’s helping St. Regis in the Major Series Lacrosse playoffs, he’s got some thoughts on Knighthawks teammate Shawn Williams and his MSL trade to Brampton. He’s also got some thoughts on the shuttle between playing for St. Regis and trying to make it to see his daughter play lacrosse, and he’s also got some thoughts on what it’s like to help a neighbor move a tree. Yes, move a tree. It’s all discussed in his latest blog installment, posted at Knighthawks.net. Check it.

Monday night saw one of this year’s biggest KO’s, winter or summer, Peterborough’s Geoff Snider letting off a bomb in Tyler Worden’s mug, much to the dislike of some in the barn. (Note: Worden busted his ankle right at the end of the throw down, nasty looking stuff)

The Lakers took the game 12-9, winning their series against the Redmen 3-1, now looking at a series against the Six Nations Chiefs, the MSL’s second seed heading into the post-season. The Chiefs led the season series 2-1, but the Lakers took the last one in an OT thriller. Check out Monday’s dust-up and knock-down after the jump. READ MORE »

Jamieson named MSL’s MVP, Rookie of the Year and scoring champ

You can’t be surprised, but we’ll let ya know anyway. Cody Jamieson, the stellar Six Nations rookie, has been named the winner of the Jim Murphy Award as the league’s MVP, the Gene Dopp Award as outstanding rookie and the Buck McDonald Award as the league’s top scorer with 48 goals and 48 assists for 96 points. It’s the first time in MSL history anyone’s won all three awards in the same season, according to The Peterborough Examiner. Peterborough’s Mac Allen got the Merv McKenzie Award as MSL’s top defensive player, edging Sid Smith of Six Nations in the voting. Brampton’s Anthony Cosmo and Pat Campbell get the Harry Lumley Award as top goaltenders and the Six Nations coaching staff of Darris Kilgour, Ron  Henry and Chuck Brown are the MSL Coaches of the Year.

Redmen giving Lakers quite the MSL battle

The Brooklin Redmen came into the Major Series Lacrosse playoffs with a 4-14 record, while the Peterborough Lakers came in with a 12-6 mark. Mismatch, right? Wrong. The Lakers won the first two games, 13-10 and 7-4, but the Redmen rallied to win Saturday’s Game 3, 10-9, with Game 4 scheduled for tonight at Brooklin at 8 p.m. That the Redmen won Saturday was a mild surprise, especially after goalie Mike Miron was sent off in the second period for illegal equipment. His sin? Cutting the palms out of his gloves. By that time, though, the Redmen had an 8-1 lead and they held off a huge Lakers rally to win. READ MORE »

Francis, and his mouthguard, will be back for St. Regis’ MSL playoff series

Brandon Francis learned his lesson, and he hopes to help the St. Regis Indians teach the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks a lesson tonight when the teams open their Major Series Lacrosse quarterfinal playoff series. Francis missed the last few games for the Indians after chipping his tooth during a recent game. “I guess I found out the hard way,” he told The Standard Freeholder. “I’ve had enough (sitting out). I have to play.” That series kicks off tonight at K-W. Meanwhile, the Peterborough Lakers opened their playoffs with a 13-10 win over Brooklin Wednesday, but they didn’t like the “horrible win,” even though they did it without Dan Carey, Geoff Snider and John Grant Jr.

Doyle on the move to Washington; lacrosse links

The transient nature of the life of an NLL star is apparent in an article in The Record, which catches up with Stealth star Colin Doyle about his family’s move to Washington with the team after its move from San Jose.

“I guess it’s goodbye sunshine,” said the Kitchener native, who slogged through a full agenda off the floor last season, conducting lacrosse clinics for school kids and their gym teachers in San Jose.

Grant, Jr. ready to hit the floor tonight; Links

It’s been a while, but John Grant Jr. is ready to hit the field again, according to an article in the Peterborough Examiner.

Grant, who hasn’t played since August of last year due to an infection that spread from an injured elbow to his knee, requiring emergency surgury, will play in the Peterborough Lakers’ final regular-season home game tonight against the St. Regis Indians.

“I’m going to be fired up, I’m not going to lie,” said Grant. “Last week, I warmed up and felt good to go, but I didn’t have a doctor’s note and I wasn’t quite mentally there. I had to watch that overtime game (an 11-9 win against the Six Nations Chiefs) and I had butterflies in my stomach the whole time.”
