Peterborough extends MSL series with Game 5 win

Playing four games in three days gave John Grant Jr. a lot of ink over the weekend and rightly so, but it was the return of Nick Cotter that sparked the Peterborough Lakers to a 9-5 win over the Brampton Excelsiors Monday night and extended this Major Series Lacrosse finals to a Game 6. Yeah, Junior popped in a goal and two assists, but Cotter was back to score two big goals in a decisive run that let the Lakers live to play another day and close Brampton’s lead in the best-of-seven series to 3-2. Game 6 is set for Wednesday night at 8 p.m. in Peterborough. READ MORE »

Playoff intensity heats up MSL, plus the links

It’s playoff time in Major Series Lacrosse and you know what that means. Yeah, emotions. Boiling over. It’s a fine balance, playing with enough intensity to fire up your team and at the same time, keeping those emotions in check. But it looks like the Lakers weren’t able to hold it in and it cost them to the tune of 59 penalty minutes, including a bench-clearing incident, in a 14-7 Game 4 loss Sunday night to Six Nations at the Memorial Centre. Still, the Lakers hold a 3-1 lead in this semifinal series while the Brampton Excelsiors hold a 2-1 lead in their semifinal series with the St. Regis Indians. READ MORE »

MSL semifinals series are set, plus the links

So we’re good to go with the Major Series Lacrosse semifinals, and more excited we cannot be because we’ve got some superb lacrosse in front of us. The St. Regis Indians locked up their spot in the semis with what looked to be a thrilling 11-10 double-overtime victory over the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks on Saturday night. That sets up their series with Brampton. In the other semifinal, we’ve got a dandy with the Peterborough Lakers taking on the Six Nations Chiefs and if it’s fireworks you want, fireworks are pretty much what we can count on in this semifinal matchup. Experience of Peterborough too much for Brooklin, plus the links

Onward it is for the Peterborough Lakers, whose 12-9 victory Monday night over the Brooklin Redmen was the clincher for the Lakers in their best-of-five Major Series Lacrosse quarterfinal playoff series. It’s not a huge surprise that the Lakers won this series, 3-1. Some may even argue that the Lakers should have won, given the talent on their roster. But that doesn’t mean we can’t take a look at the Brooklin roster, a collection of young fellas who did anything but roll over against their heavily-favored opponent. By all accounts, the Redmen have a bright future in store for them. READ MORE »

Grant Jr. pleased with progress as MSL playoffs kick off, plus the links

The Major Series Lacrosse playoff picture is all set and kicks off this week. St. Regis and Kitchener-Waterloo are ready for their quarterfinal matchup, and Peterborough’s ready for Brooklin. And speaking of being ready in Peterbrough, John Grant Jr. is ready, too. We celebrated Junior’s July 9 return to the game after his long rehab, but he didn’t play in the Lakers’ final two games, saying he wanted to rest. “There was a little tightness,” he said today from a camp he’s working. “I’m taking this seriously, and I don’t want to risk anything.” READ MORE »

Brampton sitting pretty in final MSL week, plus the links

The very word “excelsior” is a Latin term meaning high, elevated or lofty. And now that you’ve been schooled on the term, it’s time to notice just how thoroughly this lacrosse team from Brampton, Ontario, is living up to its namesake. Winners of six straight, the defending Mann Cup champs have put everyone in Major Series Lacrosse on notice. Included in those six victories is Sunday’s big 9-7 win over rival Peterborough, and that puts the Excelsiors all alone in first place with 24 points (12-5 record) as we head into the final week of the regular season. How are they doing it? READ MORE »

Shaping up in the ‘Borough, plus the links

Just one week ago, we were admiring the four-way tie atop the Major Series Lacrosse standings. Today, we’re looking at the standings and telling ourselves, “I told ya so.” A 3-0 week for the Peterborough Lakers puts them all alone at the top with 20 points (10-4 record). The Lakers surely are no strangers to the top spot, and we’re not about to imply they’ve got this thing wrapped up, not with just less than two weeks left in the regular season. But it is interesting to note how the Lakers are putting it all together, with faces new and old, including Geoff Snider. READ MORE »

The races within the MSL races

Last week, we sang the praises of the competitive race shaping up in Major Series Lacrosse as three teams sat tied atop the standings with 12 points each. This week, we need a new superlative. Why’s that? ‘Cause now we have FOUR teams jammed at the top. Brampton, Peterborough, Six Nations and St. Regis all are sittin’ pretty with 14 points each and Kitchener-Waterloo isn’t in a bad spot either, chasin’ tail with 12 points. That leaves the contest for the sixth and final MSL playoff spot between Shawn-Williams-less-Brooklin (4 points) and Barrie (4), and they’ll get right at it with Thursday’s game at Barrie. Culp, O’Brien traded to Six Nations as MSL race heats up, plus the links

It’s getting hot up north. Not only do we have a three-team logjam at the top of Major Series Lacrosse with Peterborough, Six Nations and St. Regis all sporting 12 points, the Six Nations Chiefs pulled the trigger on a deal that brings Chad Culp and Tim O’Brien to the team. Culp’s situation in Barrie wasn’t a good one, so when when Six Nations general manager Duane Jacobs got the call that Culp was available for a trade, he didn’t hesitate. Because not only does the trade bring a fine stick to the Nation, it keeps that stick away from any other MSL contenders. READ MORE »

Jamieson has Six Nations on top of MSL, plus the links

Come on now, are you really surprised? Be honest. Cody Jamieson’s tearing up Major Series Lacrosse this summer, and you know absolutely no one is the least bit shocked. Last year’s Junior of the Year is leading the circuit with 21 goals and 22 assists in just seven games. Not coincidentally, his Six Nations Chiefs are 6-2 and at the top of the MSL standings with 12 points. ““Cody  … really knows how to put the ball in the net when he gets the opportunity,” Chiefs coach Darris Kilgour told The Peterborough Examiner recently after Jamieson lit up the Lakers for 10 points.
