Corey Hallman steps down in K-W, Hired by Boston Blazers

kwlogo.jpg

It’ll be strange not seeing Corey Hallman in some sorta official capacity with the K-W Braves this summer, but the former water boy, player, coach, GM and one of the biggest supporters of the game in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, has stepped down from his position as the Braves GM, ending a history with the team that has spanned three decades.

Hallman, who was recently brought on board as an assistant coach with the Boston Blazers, told the Waterloo Area Record, “It’s a tough decision but I think the right one for my family and the team. I loved my time with the Braves. They’ve been a part of my family almost since the day I was born.” READ MORE »

Jamieson, Je. Thompson on track to play lacrosse for Syracuse

Cody Jamieson is expected to join Syracuse in the fall
Cody Jamieson is expected to join Syracuse in the fall
Syracuse Orange fans concerned about a title defense without offensive leaders Mike Leveille and Steven Brooks might be able to breath a bit easier this fall.

Hyped Canadian prospect Cody Jamieson finished up classes Friday for Onondaga Community College and will graduate, says OCC coach Chuck Wilbur. And contrary to some rumors, the dynamic attackman is applying to Syracuse, not entering the National Lacrosse League Entry Draft. Wilbur is hopeful Jamieson can get in to SU in time for the fall but said worst-case scenario would be the spring. The important thing, for SU fans, is that Jamieson did everything he needed to do this summer and will graduate from OCC.

More good news comes in regard to Jeremy Thompson, a middie from nearby LaFayette High and a former IL Top 10 recruit. The do-it-all middie took classes this summer in Northern New York while playing for Akwesasne in the Canadian Junior A loop. Wilbur says Thompson should be good to go as well, but that it will take a bit longer to sort through because the credits must transfer back to OCC. Worst-case with Thompson, Wilbur says, is that he’d have to finish up at OCC in the fall and head to SU for the spring semester.

Ontario Jr. A Coach and GM Poll

jimmora.JPG

There’s a reason that some of the most memorable moments in sports history have happened off of the field and in front of the microphone. That reason? Coaches. While the player polls have provided some unforgettable insights into the inner workings of Jr. A, we thought it was time to see what the big mouths from behind the bench had to say, beginning with Ontario. When it comes to guys like Cody Jamieson and Nick Rose, they are who we thought they were. But who would take home titles like hardest-working, smartest player, and the guy most likely to have you looking around for the first-aid kit before the first punch is even thrown? Read on. A’s and Arrows game 2 and 4 tonight

Just a quick note for anyone planning on attending the St. Catharines Athletics and Six Nations Arrows game tonight in St. Catharines. Because game two was called on Wednesday in the second period due to dangerous floor conditions, prior to game four the two teams will be completing game two, picking up where they left off which was with 4:51 remaining in the second period and the A’s leading 8-6. Do not go to the Bill Burgoyne Arena unless you enjoy standing around with your arms comically outstretched saying “where is everybody?” with no one there to answer your question since they will all be at the Meridian Credit Union Arena in Virgil. This facility is located about 15 minutes away from St. Catharines and is also known as Centennial Arena, here is a map and instructions. Game two begins at 7 pm and game four will begin 30 minutes after the completion of game two.

Northmen advance to finals with sweep over Akwesasne

orangeville_northmen.jpg

It took them until the final seven minutes of the game, but the Orangeville Northmen tied it up, grabbed the lead and held on when it mattered most to take a 6-5 win over the Akwesasne Indians in game four and advance to the Ontario finals.

Goaltender Nick Rose made a massive 48 saves in the win including 14 in the all-important third period. Adam Jones and Stephen Keogh scored two each, with one of Keogh’s markers coming at 13:15 in the third to tie things up at 5. Matt McLeod and Jeff Ivey added singles, with Ivey getting the game-winner with less than four minutes remaining in regulation. For the Indians, goaltender Torry Bigtree stopped 39 of 45, with 15 of those saves coming in a shut-out second period, and Kyle Buchanan scored one and assisted on three. The Orangeville Northmen will take on the winner of the Six Nations-St. Catharines series in the finals. The series is currently tied 1-1.

Ontario Jr. A award winners and all-stars announced

codyj.jpg

The Ontario Junior A lacrosse league today announced the majority of their league award winners as well as first and second all-star teams. To the surprise of absolutely no one, Six Nations Arrows star Cody Jamieson has collected three awards so far in addition to securing his spot with the first team all-stars. This season saw Jamieson put up an incredible 101 points on 59 goals and 42 assists. Through eight games in the playoffs, he’s added 20 goals and 27 assists to his total and has maintained his reign at the top of Paul Tutka’s moneyballers week in and week out as the guy most likely to be winning games for his team. But even with Jamieson snapping up three awards that still leaves plenty of honours for the rest of the league, so for a full list of award winners and all-stars, read on. READ MORE »

Orangeville thumps Akwesasne 17-3

orangeville_northmen.jpg

After narrowly earning the game one win in overtime, the Orangeville Northmen figured they’d had their share of the dramatics and buried the Akwesasne Indians by a score of 17-3 last night. It was a nearly non-stop Orangeville barrage from the opening minutes of the game, with Stephen Keogh scoring five, Adam Jones scoring two and assisting on four, Sean Gillies with two and three, and Jeff Ivey with four helpers. The Orangeville D held Akwesasne to just 33 shots and allowed Nick Rose to take the third period off while back-up goaltender Dillon Ward posted a shut-out 20 minutes. Akwesasne goals came from Mark Kirby, Peter Jacobs, and Lyle Thompson, who also assisted on the other two. The Indians will be looking to bounce back in game three on Thursday at home in Akwesasne, 8:00 PM EST.

Akwesasne Indians protesting the protest

akw_bur_ola.jpg

The back story is a little convoluted, but it goes something like this: the Akwesasne Indians downed the Burlington Chiefs 8-6 in game two of their best-of-seven series. The Burlington Chiefs then noticed that Akwesasne had two unaffiliated players in their line-up for that game and protested the result. The OLA found that the players were, in fact, unaffiliated and in keeping with the rules pertaining to this very situation the game two result was reversed and the win was awarded to the Burlington Chiefs. That brought the series from being 2-0 in Akwesasne’s favour to 1-1. The series now stands at 3-2 for the Chiefs.

However, as the lacrosse world turns, the Akwesasne Indians are now protesting the protest, with Akwesasne coach Adam Thompson saying “they should have made their appeal before the game when they got the scoresheet.” If Akwesasne is successful in their appeal, the series will then be 3-2 in favour of the Indians heading into game six. It’s looking like we’re going to have to wait a while for official word with a meeting between the league and managers taking place prior to game six on Tuesday, but for now, let’s hear your thoughts.

Which team should be awarded the game two win?

Burlington and Orangeville each go up 3-1 in playoffs

akw_bur_ola.jpg

With a shut-out third period from Gary Muzzin and two markers from Kiel Matisz along with one each from Kevin Brownell and Jordan MacIntosh to close out the game, the Burlington Chiefs are now up 3-1 in their series against the Akwesasne Indians after an 11-8 win last night.

Matisz had three goals and one helper on the night, while Brownell had two and four and Muzzin blocked a total of 26 in his 53 minutes played. Cody Jacobs led the Indians with three goals. The Chiefs will have the opportunity to bounce the Indians from the playoffs tonight in game five at the Akwarnaro Arena, 6:00 PM EST.

The Orangeville Northmen are back to winning after bouncing back from Friday’s loss to top the Brampton Excelsiors 7-5 last night. READ MORE »

Six Nations Arrows also disciplined for illegal player

team126633.gif

It appears that the Akwesasne Indians weren’t the only ones that got nailed by the league for using what was later deemed an ineligible player during this year’s OLA Jr. A playoffs.

NLL Insider has learned that the Six Nations Arrows were also disciplined by the OLA yesterday for the use of an unaffiliated player during their current post-season series.

The unaffiliated player that the Arrows inserted in their lineup, during Game 2 of their series with the Peterborough Lakers, was Hamilton Bengals (OLA Jr. B) forward Ryan Dilks. READ MORE »

Akwesasne Indians busted, Game 2 goes to Burlington Chiefs

akw_bur_ola.jpg

The Akwesasne Indians’ Game 2 win over the Burlington Chiefs has been overturned by the OLA after the league learned that the Indians had used two unaffiliated players during that game in the best of seven series.

Although all the player stats gained in that game will still be awarded to the respective players, the OLA has awarded the win to Burlington, even though the final ended in Akwesasne’s favor, 8-6.

After last night’s 9-6 win for the Chiefs, Burlington now leads the series two game to one, with game four heading back to Akwarnaro Arena in Akwesasne on Saturday afternoon (2PM EST). READ MORE »

Ugly Game 1 likely sparks end for Moxam this season

In the aftermath of an ugly Game 1 between the St. Catharines Athletics and KW Braves, which saw Braves’ defender and assistant captain, Craig Zeeh, sustain a slight concussion during the A’s 6-4 win, it appears that referee Tom Moxam, the man many point to for a lot of the confusion and ugliness stemming from the opening round game, will not be used for the remainder of the series and likely the rest of the Junior A post-season altogether. Northmen top Arrows in battle of the best

orangeville_northmen.jpg

For the second time this season the Orangeville Northmen have beat Six Nations in a clash between the top two teams in Ontario Junior A, this time besting the Arrows 14-6. The Northmen got out to a 3-0 lead to begin the first, and though Six Nations crawled back to end the period with two goals that would be the last time the Arrows were able to drum up any consecutive offense. Orangeville tender Nick Rose turned away 37 shots and teamed up with the Orangeville defense to hold Six Nations’ major scoring threat Cody Jamieson to one assist. READ MORE »

Mississauga Tomahawks break into the win column

tomahawkslogo.jpg

For all of the Alberta Jr. A lacrosse fans wondering exactly who Marc Nano is, he’s the guy who gave the Mississauga Tomahawks their first win in his final game with them this season, a 9-5 victory over the Toronto Beaches. His 50 saves, shutout overtime period, and assist on the final Tomahawks goal was good enough to earn him Player of the Game recognition. Todd Kozak and Simon DeSousa led the Tomahawks offense with two goals and two helpers apiece. Nano will join the Edmonton Eclipse early next week.

In other Ontario Jr. A action, the St. Catharines Athletics thumped the Orillia Rama-Hammond Kings 12-3, thanks largely to Joey Resetarits (3g) Andrew Potter (2g 3a) and Corey Small (2g 5a). And the Brampton Excelsiors topped the K-W Braves 11-4.

Young Jacobs is busy being great

Even if you don’t remember that kid outta Portland, Peter Jacobs, it doesn’t matter. The way this kid’s rollin’, it won’t be long before he’s a household name in the world of lacrosse.

jacobsp.jpg

Jacobs, the 18-year-old with the savvy of a seasoned veteran, is the forward who helped lead Portland to the National Lacrosse League title game, scoring two goals in a losing effort. In the final seconds of that game against Buffalo, he nearly scored in the final seconds to force overtime. Well, this summer’s no different. He’s been a solid baller for his Jr. A Akwesasne Indians and now he’s headed out West to see what he can do for his Iroquois National team at the World U19 Field Lacrosse Championships in British Columbia. “I’d do anything for it (lacrosse),” Jacobs told The Cornwall Standard Freeholder.

Orangeville stacks up with Keogh and Hosmer

stephen_keogh.jpg

As the Ontario Junior A trade deadline approaches, the Orangeville Northmen have pulled off a deal that may have the team booking a trip to the Minto.

The Orangeville Northmen have obtained the Jr. A playing rights of Stephen Keogh and Todd Hosmer from the Toronto Beaches in exchange for the Northmen’s 2010 1st and 2nd round draft picks as well as monetary compensation for their services for the remainder of the 2008 season.

Orangeville General Manager Bob Clevely is understandably “very excited to have them on board with the Northmen organization.”

The Northmen were reportedly one of five teams vying for Keogh and Hosmer as the Beaches made the class-act decision to trade two of their star players to a definite contender in their final year of Junior lacrosse. In nine games this season, the NCAA championship-winning Keogh has racked up 26 points while Hosmer has 24 points in 12 matches. Through 14 games the Northmen are in first place with a record of 13-1.
