Young Jacobs is busy being great

Even if you don’t remember that kid outta Portland, Peter Jacobs, it doesn’t matter. The way this kid’s rollin’, it won’t be long before he’s a household name in the world of lacrosse.

jacobsp.jpg

Jacobs, the 18-year-old with the savvy of a seasoned veteran, is the forward who helped lead Portland to the National Lacrosse League title game, scoring two goals in a losing effort. In the final seconds of that game against Buffalo, he nearly scored in the final seconds to force overtime. Well, this summer’s no different. He’s been a solid baller for his Jr. A Akwesasne Indians and now he’s headed out West to see what he can do for his Iroquois National team at the World U19 Field Lacrosse Championships in British Columbia. “I’d do anything for it (lacrosse),” Jacobs told The Cornwall Standard Freeholder.

stephen_keogh.jpg

As the Ontario Junior A trade deadline approaches, the Orangeville Northmen have pulled off a deal that may have the team booking a trip to the Minto.

The Orangeville Northmen have obtained the Jr. A playing rights of Stephen Keogh and Todd Hosmer from the Toronto Beaches in exchange for the Northmen’s 2010 1st and 2nd round draft picks as well as monetary compensation for their services for the remainder of the 2008 season.

Orangeville General Manager Bob Clevely is understandably “very excited to have them on board with the Northmen organization.”

The Northmen were reportedly one of five teams vying for Keogh and Hosmer as the Beaches made the class-act decision to trade two of their star players to a definite contender in their final year of Junior lacrosse. In nine games this season, the NCAA championship-winning Keogh has racked up 26 points while Hosmer has 24 points in 12 matches. Through 14 games the Northmen are in first place with a record of 13-1.

Update to the Kent Squire-Hill story

kent.jpg

As we reported yesterday, Kent Owen Hill–the man reportedly charged in the death of Tashina General–has been confirmed to be Six Nations Arrows transition player Kent Squire-Hill. Hill has been charged with second degree murder in connection with the death.

In light of these developments, Arrows head coach Regy Thorpe spoke with the Hamilton Spectator. While Thorpe describes Hill as a “wonderful man on and off the field” he stresses that the thoughts and prayers of the Arrows are first and foremost with the family of Tashina General.

On January 23, 2008 General’s mother notified police that her daughter had not returned home overnight after leaving for work the day previous. Her remains were discovered Friday, April 25 in an area near Chiefswood Road and Indian Townline. According to police, cause of death was strangulation.

Hill is said to have appeared in Brantford court yesterday for a remand hearing after he was reportedly arrested in North Bay and brought back to Six Nations. Hill is the alleged ex-boyfriend of General though the paternity of General’s unborn baby is as yet unconfirmed.

In addition to his junior career with the Six Nations Arrows which includes four league titles and one Minto Cup, Hill was a member of the 2006 and 2007 Iroquois Nationals, was named the 2007 Midfielder of the Year for the National Champion Onondaga Community College, and was expected to play for Syracuse University this fall.
